  • I just want to do my shopping!

I swear, I must have some kind of scent on me that means complete strangers have to comment on what I'm buying or doing when I'm shopping... I've posted on here before about people doing this but oh it's happened again!

Popped into the local supermarket as I've been away and have no food in the house. I was only in there about 15 minutes but I got accosted twice in that time.

    Firstly...
    Me - Well me.
Older Couple - OC Man and Woman

These two were in their 60s and looking at the sausages. I come along pick up the brand I always gets and stick them in my basket - note the brand I get are a value range...

OCW - Oh you shouldn't buy them!
    - I ignore them at this point because I thought she was talking to her husband-
OCW - you shouldn't ignore people!
Me - Sorry I didn't realise you were talking to me
OCW - You shouldn't buy those sausages, they're cheap and nasty
Me - Actually they taste fine
OCM - you should buy something like these - Thrusts a pack of premium sausage in my face, your talking a price difference of nearly £3.00 here.
Me - These ones are just fine thanks
OCW - but they are probably made up of all the disgusting bits of meat!
Me - Well thy probably are but unless you are going to buy those ones for me I can't afford them.

I walked off at that point. If I had a choice I probably would buy some nice sausages - in fact I'f probably go to a butchers, but I'm a graduate. Value ones do the job for me.

Next one, these time I'd got to baked beans... As with the sausages I picked up a value tin of baked beans

AOW (another older woman) - Do those taste nice?
    Me - Err, yeah?
AOW - Well I just don't know Heinz beans are so expensive, but they taste nice
Me - Well these taste fine to me
AOW - I hate the way they keep putting prices up!
    Me - uhuh...
AOW - I mean I normally pick up these (some other brand) but now you can only get them in packs of four and the price has gone up as well! Do you think the value brand are nice?
Me - Well i think you get a bit more sauce than maybe other brands but i just drain it off
AOW - So you would say Heinz are better? Why don't you buy them?
Me - (feeling like I'm having deja vu) Because I can't afford them, and at the end of the day they are only baked beans. I stick chili flakes on them anyway so I can't comment on the taste
AOW looks at me like I'm a freak so I take my chance to leave.

I'm gonna start dressing like a punk or a goth so people avoid me in shops.

Does the sausage couple think that their brand is made of prime cuts? It's SAUSAGE! They ALL are made from the less picturesque portions of the animals.

My advice? Cheap-ass but highly visible earbuds. you know, the kind that doesn't actually block out any sound? don't have to plug them in or anything, just wear them and people should leave you alone ^__^ thats what i do anyway >_>

I think the seond lady was just looking to be advised. But you didn't ask for the advice of the old couple. I've never criticized the contents of anyone else's cart; I want to get my own shopping done and go home.

For what it's worth, I much prefer those value beans to the more expensive ones

I have had rather lost and confused looking guys ask me for help in picking out fresh fruit now and then, and a young lady who was probably on her own for the first time asking about what cut of beef would be best for a pot roast.

Honestly, if you are not really familiar with shopping for real foods it can get confusing.

And YOU shouldn't offer impertinent unsolicited opinions to complete strangers under the guise of being friendly.

And let's not get started on other people's perceived rudeness, when your own manners stink.

Some people really don't have a built in filter, geesh.

I can't recall ever having someone do that to me. I do get asked questions if someone sees me buy a package or vegetable they don't know about (I got asked how I cooked rapini a few months ago). I don't mind that.

But geesh, questioning your eating habits? That's just crazy.

I'll grant that that's true. And in supermarkets (as opposed to grocers, butchers, and bakeries), it can also be hard to find knowledgeable people to ask.

I'll second this and raise you loud metal blaring through those headphones. I've only once gotten glared at when listening to my music and almost never get asked questions. And even if I'm listening to music I say excuse me on the bus or in the store when passing someone in a narrow walkway/aisle (at a normal volume too).

(Sucker bet time.) I bet it won't work.

(I have obviously read too many similar stories on this forum.)

That should go without saying. We're talking about a pile of lips and assholes ground up shoved into a piece of intestine. And that's the good part about sausage.

                          Delicious, delicious lips and assholes.

                              Take a buddy.

My boyfriend and I do our shopping together and I don't recall anyone ever commenting on our shopping choices. Of course, it might have something to do with his being over 6' and weighing in near 300 lbs.
