  • Line cutting pays off big time

So, when I ordered my breakfast this morning at the local c-store/diner I also asked for a scratch ticket because I had a good feeling about the one that was up there.

As the cashier turned to grab my ticket, her husband bypassed me - and the rest of the line behind me - to say 'No, give me one first.' And so he got handed the ticket I was trying to buy.

I said to the cashier "Really, you're just going to let him cut ahead of me like that?"
She replied "Wha-a-a-at? He's my husband, what can you do, y'know?"

Then, to top it off, he won $10,000 on that ticket which he was scratching as I was paying for my finally completed order.

I am so I wanted to just walk up and punch him. Not only did he cut, but he got paid off for doing so.

Normally I would have read the riot act, but I know everyone at this store and I know the manager won't take any real action. I will be taking my business elsewhere from now on though...

Unfortunately, complaining to her boss would make it look like you just had sour grapes about not winning, and I guess it's not your product until you've paid for it and it's in your hand. Still, that was really sketchy; I'm sure you could complain about her letting her family member cut in front. Also, had he paid for the ticket upon scratching, and also, is she supposed to sell lotto to family? She could still get in trouble.

good point. you paid for a ticket and her husband grabbed it.

i'd talk to the manager and ask for the video to be played.

Good point. Since it was her husband, and a winning ticket, it looks very suspicious. Definitely complain to the lottery commision.

            excellent point.

it was bought and paid for.
the clerk gave it to her husband instead of the customer. the commission might find it interesting

It was requested, but not yet paid for.

I'd still raise a stink, however, since the fact that the hubby won a large amount of money off of a ticket that should have gone to someone else entirely, while not actually improper, looks improper as hell, and that's often worse than just being improper.

I would complain. It does sound suspicious, and I know I would want answers.

I would be seriously burned if that were me.

At the supermarket, employees were absolutely not allowed to buy lottery tickets there, and we weren't even allowed to run family members through our register (I realize this is not really an option for c-stores). But the fact she sold him the ticket after he shoved in in front of you, and then he won a considerable amount ... yeah, I'd drop the lottery commission a line. That looks really bad.

And I'd phrase my complaint to the store manager with my emphasis on her letting her husband displace everybody else in line. If there had been six or eight people waiting, would she still have let him push his way through first?

As for "What can you do?" -- well, how 'bout doing your job properly?? But I guess there's no incentive when there are no consequences.

I would be raging mad if that was me.

But since it was her husband, this sounds mighty suspicious. I didn't even think lotto retailers were allowed to play lotto and this is probably a good reason why.

Most stores, including C-stores have a rule about family members not being able to purchase lottery tickets at that store for just that reason.

File a complaint with Corporate and with the Lottery commission as they can pull the video to show she allowed her husband to cut in and grab a winning ticket (doesn't matter that they couldn't know in advance)

It's a local, indepentently owned C-store. I used to work at 'corporate'. I was doing accounts payable and IT help desk for the store as well as 4 other businesses that the owner has.

That's why I know complaining to management will fall on deaf ears. I'm a 'traitor', after all, since I left to go work somewhere else. Somewhere with fewer hours, more money, and better benefits. Clearly, I have no loyalty.

I may drop a line to the lottery commission. But since he did pay for the ticket, or at least dropped a crumpled bill on the counter in front of her, I don't think there's anything wrong with it. It was a scratch ticket that was torn off the book, but unscratched, there's really no way she could have known it was a winner.

Part of it is just 'sour grapes', but since I had asked for the ticket I think a little bit of feeling entitled on my part is okay. At least I know my 'good feeling' about the ticket was accurate.

By the same token, the company could just spin it as an ex-employee, who wasn't on good terms with management (which I wasn't) trying to stir up trouble. It might a bit too much of a can of worms to open for basically no gain. I suppose I could make it anonymous, but then I can't relay the incident as it happened since the employees could ID me. Okay, now I'm arguing myself in circles. Time for bed.

Sorry you got burned. It really sucks when some jerk is being an asshole and it pays off. I hope their ill-gotten gains bring them nothing but bad luck!
