  • Scam, Brainburp or just Sucky?

So I was in Starbucks this morning getting wonderful tea goodness. This is a very busy location (right by a high school and close to a large residential neighborhood). The line is super long (seriously, 20 minutes from the time I entered to when I got out of there, I felt bad for the baristas; they were slammed.) I really wasn't trying to snoop or be nosy but I was bored and at an angle where I could see all this happening.

I've ordered and paid and am waiting for my drinks when a teenage girl who's at the counter orders her drink. Lady at register marks the cup, puts it in the queue for the barista and rings up the teen.. Total comes to $6.80
Teen (handing over some cash - I see another dollar in her wallet): Can I run out to my car and get you 80 cents? Is that okay?
Cashier (looking at line of 8 people behind girl): Well I guess I can suspend if it you have it in the car...if that's the easiest thing? (I think hinting at - you don't have another buck or a cc?)
    Teen: I'll be right back
Teen backs away from register and kinda melds into the crowd. I watch her and it doesn't seem like she is heading to her car, just kinda wandering around the store.

By this point my drinks came and I didn't see the girl but I wondered: Was she trying to not have to pay as much for her drinks (scam) by having them put into the queue and having the transaction suspended? Was she not wanting more change and was just having a brain burp about her last buck, or was she just in general sucky for holding up a line when it's obvious that their busy? Thoughts?

did she have her coffee already? if so then i'd say some kind of scam if she obviously wasn't going to get the rest of the money

It seems she didn't have her coffee, but she may have decided that $6.80 was more than she wanted to pay. She might have thought she could grab the coffee when it was done and they would forget she hadn't paid, because if they suspended the transaction I'm sure they didn't keep the money she had given them.
