  • Reading Comprehension Failure

Now, we've all seen the stories, or had first hand experience of how the "Up to 20% Off" signs bring out the EWs and SCs in droves. "Why is this only 5% off rabble rabble, get me a manager rabble rabble."

Now I'm seeing it online. I recently pre-ordered Star Wars, The Old Republic. very recently. I knew about the early game access, but you know what? Wasn't high on my reasons for getting it. Still, got an email stating they were extending it two days, and that everyone who had pre-ordered would get to play up to 5 days early, with access starting on December 13th at 7 AM EST. Emails will be sent when you have access.

"Cool," I think. "I'll check my email, and maybe just trawl through the forums until I do get in to play."

I don't get in this morning, and likely won't get in today, or tomorrow - as I said, recently, VERY recently pre-ordered - get a little pang of "aww, no lightsabers for me today" and move on.

I check the SWTOR forums because, well, I'd like to get a little idea of what sort of builds to use for characters. That goes out the window, though.

"I can't believe I don't have access what is this crap you guys have my money I deserve to play now worst launch ever"

"I made a promise to a guild I would be in today give me my access right NAO!"

"Obviously this game is going to fail cause Bioware can't keep a simple promise"

"I'm canceling right this second because I didn't get an invite."

Countless people took time off work to play this - without having a confirmation that they would be able to.

One of my personal favorites was someone claiming they should have been playing for 16 hours, because it had been today in their timezone for 16 hours.

Time to just shake my head, grab some popcorn and be amused.

It reminds me of when the conan MMO wasn't available for free play when the designers projected, so a bunch of gamers tried to sue for not being able to play.

it was like that when i played everquest.

if an update came through and people couldn't get into game they turned into screaming entitlement whores, demanding refunds, expecting to talk to the the techs 'right now' etc. and none of it ever worked for them.

it's amazing how people turn into 2 year olds when you take away their addictive toys for any length of time.

I've seen that happen with online games too. I play several games on FB and one of them recently underwent some upgrading/modification/whathaveyou. And people were whining and screaming all over the place because the work didn't happen instantaneously and they actually COULDN'T PLAY for maybe a couple of days ... ... the horror!! Luckily some of the other players weren't having it; they told the EWs to please leave and take their sucky attitudes with them, that the creator(s) of the game might actually have RL stuff to do, if that was OK with the EWs, please 'n' thanks?

Yeah, I shan't be getting in til Friday, but I'm cool with that. Have other things to do, so *shrug* and keep looking forward.

It's not abated at all today, either, the utter and complete rage for no reason. It really makes it seem like not playing this game RIGHT NAO is the worst thing that could have possibly happened to a lot of these people.

Also, someone today guaranteed that the game with fail in 4-6 months. I always like that.

I pre-ordered, but I'm not freaking out over getting in RIGHT NAO. I also play another game, City of Heroes, which just started its winter event, and I've got some characters to run through that for the badges.
I figure, why freak out? It's not going to get my invite out faster, and it's not like I don't have other things to do too.

It's STILL like that when I play EQ. Though the board population has matured somewhat; people tend to keep their inability to get in game limited to 1 or 2 threads due to the mods (and partly because we've slowly started to learn our lesson). Still, if they go over the time estimates, the ATUY threads pop up like weeds.

But if the online play isn't available yet, the rest of your guild wouldn't be able to play now anyway, so the game publisher isn't causing you to let your guild down.

I'd like to see that one reach court, and the judge award them damages equal to double the subscription fees for the time between projected availability and actual availability - in other words, a big fat NOTHING.

The last couple minutes before servers shut down for the last maintenance before the games goes real live I saw people complaining in chat that they paid $5 for this extra week and they were pissed they didn't get all of it.

Or that there was going to be any interruption at all in game play.

I wasn't paying too much attention. Had to finish those last couple quests before servers went down

What's funny is that the $5 they paid was to guarantee their pre-order. It comes off the final price of the game. So, they didn't actually pay for this extra week because the money they laid down comes off the purchase price that everybody paid for whatever version of the game they went with. People just don't understand how stuff like that works, obviously, and we all know that SC and EW don't bother to read the fine print.
While the fanbois were going [way] overboard, at the heart was sort of a valid complaint, since the preorders were pushed partially with the promise of early access time. Not worth the fracus, but they might have been better off killing the servers at midnight, and turning them back on in the morning, rather than cutting the early access that already was short for some people due to how they did the rolling invites. But then, I just popped in Saints Row 3 and blew up an aircraft carrier instead.
