  • Following Directions - Too Hard for Cheesesteaks?

Went to get a sandwich today and they stopped serving breakfast at 10am. This doesn't make much sense to me since who starts eating lunch at 10am? But I decided to get a Philly Cheesesteak so I went up asked for a cheesesteak but without the cheese. I just want a steak sandwich. Really simple, right? Chopped up steak, bread. That's it. I even hear the woman taking the order tell them no cheese. I get my sandwich, check it, and there's some peppers and onions in it. This pisses me off for multiple reasons. I didn't ask for peppers or onions. The picture of the sandwich doesn't have peppers or onions. Nowhere does it state that it comes with peppers and onions. I've never been to a place where it comes with peppers and onions without asking for them. Whatever, I can just pick them off.

Just got back to my lab, really open it up (Because they don't have sub rolls, they make them into wraps.) and not only do they have the peppers and onions, there is mayonnaise all in it. What the hell? And not just a little bit, but a lot! Who puts mayonnaise in a cheesesteak? I've never met anyone who does.

Only in freaking Afghanistan. Two more weeks...

If you specifically said Philly Cheesesteak, it's traditional for them to have friend onions and peppers on them. I know this, because I traditionally only want the steak and cheese.

Never heard of mayo on them...

Yeah, I've normally come across peppers and onions in a Philly Cheesesteak.

      But mayo?! YUCK.

I know peppers and onions are quite common to have put on a Philly Cheesesteak, but at the same time, even when I went to school just outside Philly, no one automatically put peppers and onions on them. They'd either ask you or you had to ask.

Really? I grew up in Lower Bucks County, considered the suburbs of Philly. Always had to specifically ask for them not to be put on.

            I was in Chester Country.

I always figuring when you are making foods. You start basic (Sub roll, steak, cheese) and then go up from there.

Really depends where you go, sadly. When I lived in the Scranton area for awhile, their "cheesesteaks" were chopped steak (as in the grilling type of steak) on bread with cheese on top... Needless to say, for a family that grew up around Philly we were confused and disappointed!

I lived in the Dover DE area, and would head north to get the real deal Philly. They always came with peppers and onions unless I asked them to hold the peppers (which I usually do, I don't like green peppers).

Can't remember if mayo came with it but I think it did. I can't stand mayo so I'm always careful to ask, and have it held if needed.

I like Mayo on my cheesesteaks and bell peppers and cheese. That's it. Nothing else. (If the onions are cooked, Then I will have some, but raw onions make me ill <heartburn type ill, not allergic type ill>)

That's weird, all the places I've gotten a steak I've had to ask for peppers and onions. Though, come to think of it, I usually order a cheese steak with fried onions, so...

Where in gods name were you ordering that mayo came standard? Tell me so I can avoid it!

And now, because of some of y'alls descriptions (steak, bell pepper, onion), I want fajitas....

Therein lies the problem. I don't think you'll have a hard time avoiding it!

I would rather ask if I can make a custom sandwich from scratch (Despite it possibly being a simple substitution of nothing instead of something in a default sandwich) than ask for an otherwise default sandwich without a single ingredient.

I honestly can't remember. I haven't had an honest to God Philly Cheesesteak since I left Delaware . . . 13 years ago

I often make my own. They're not quite as good, because I don't have a griddle that hasn't been cleaned since the last visit by the health inspector, but they're pretty tasty.
