  • Telephone Idiot

I really don't understand this conversation..

Phone rings. Caller ID says "Private" which normally means it's the scammers, or the survey idiots. This time it's not.

    Idiot: Is Mike there?
Me: There's no one here called Mike.
Idiot: Yeah, Mike gave me this number.
Me: Well he gave you the wrong number.
Idiot: You can just give me Mike now!
Me: You can just go away.

    I hung up.

Why would I lie about a Mike? The only mike here is in the mouthpiece of the telephone.

Oh good god! I got almost an identical call at my work a while back, except mine went on a lot longer, because I was forced to be nice to the guy. I'm still wondering if it was a prank call or not. Basically, it started out the way yours did, but then the caller insisted I go ask everyone in the store if they were "mike" or whatever name and when I refused stating that it was a work phone and mike could not use it even if I did find mike, the caller replied that mike told him to call him there and that mike would definitely be there and he had to talk to mike.

I think I have worked it out. Some 2 or 3 years ago my mother started getting calls for some name like Mike [Our Lastname]. No matter how many times she told this idiot she did not know this name, he kept calling and harassing her.

Finally he started on me, and I didn't stand for him for very long, telling him to go away in no uncertain terms.

Then my mother got a call from someone else for the same person, and it was a debt collector. He explained that he had taken over the account from this other idiot and that he would get our numbers taken off the call list.

The voice (and attitude) sounds much like the original caller. I only just remembered that. He's going to get an earful if he rings back.

Ugh I get these all the time. There's a woman with my first initial and last name that owns a home across town. Her number is unlisted. Contractors wanting to work on her house go in the phone book and find mine, which was only listed by first initial.

The best part is, when I ask where they got the number they flat out lie to me and say my number is listed on the title, or they spoke to "Judith" at this number before. I checked with the title company. It's not. And I've had this number for 6 years, no you haven't. AND I'm on the DNC.

It's a good thing I rent, because there's apparently not an honest contractor within 100 miles of me.

I hate people who call private caller. My work uses a blocked number, but not *67.

Why would anyone want to hide from someone they know? Why hide yourself?

Paranoia knows no bounds. Anyway most people that are hiding, are hiding from people they know.

Was he asking for Mike Hunt per chance?

My MIL the divorce lawyer has an unlisted number that shows up as "Private" on calls. She only releases her cell phone number.

In this day and age, a land-line phone is almost a must (cells are more so now) and you have two options, listed or unlisted. Unfortunately, being unlisted means having the number show up as "Private" or "Unavailable."

There is a rather good reasons for having an unlisted number, like hiding from an abusive ex, an adult child hiding from his/her abusive parent or even a business owner who doesn't want customers calling his/her home at all hours of the night.

That said, I do wish that businesses that want me to call them back have their numbers listed on the CID. I've had a scammer try to get my bank information by calling me claiming they were with said bank. Unfortunately, the bank's number only shows up as a number and no name too! (I know that the bank doesn't need my info if they're calling ME.)

In gerund's case, the person was just a complete idiot.
If I make no sense, I apologize. I'm constantly interrupted by an actual toddler.

Sadly... I've seen this name. Why his parents thought it a good idea I don't know.
