  • Transportation Woes

I've been without transportation for the last several weeks. This has presented a bit of a problem, because I'm 8.5 months pregnant and have appointments that I need to attend. So I called up my insurance company and found out they will provide transportation to and from appointments as long as I set it up 48 hours in advance.

So last week, I call the transportation company to set up a ride to and from my appointment. I give them my home address, the name and address of the building my doctor's office is in, plus the name of the practice, tell them that it is a pregnancy related appointment and the time I need to be there. They said ok, and I thought everything was set up.

The actual day of my appointment, the driver showed up at my house on time, and he had me sign a log twice, basically authorizing the trip I guess. He never verified my name, or where I needed to go, just took off.

We get downtown, and he goes straight past the building I'm supposed to go to. I thought maybe he just wasn't familiar with the building, so I pointed out the building to him, and said that was the building I needed to be at.

At this point a confused look comes over his face, and he asks me my name, which I told him. It turns out that the transportation company, had me down as going to the Children's Hospital, instead of the correct building. The driver refused to drop me off at the correct building, and said that he was only authorized to drop me off at the Children's Hospital, and that if I wanted to get to my appointment I'd have to walk the rest of the way, dropped me off at the Children's Hospital, then left.

This wouldn't have been such a big deal, but I'm 8.5 months pregnant, and it was cold out, and I wasn't anticipating having to walk so I only had my medium weight jacket instead of my heavy weight jacket. But regardless I sucked it up and walked to my appointment.

When I got inside I called the transportation company to let them know of this error, and to find out if I was going to have to walk back to the Children's Hospital to get picked up or if they could pick me up from the correct address. They said they could pick me up from the correct address which I gave them again, and described the building, plus the building across the street so the driver could be sure he was in the correct spot, then I sat around and waited on my ride home.

40 minutes later a driver finally showed up, and told me that in spite of me telling the transportation company the correct address, they still sent him to the Children's Hospital and that he spent quite awhile driving around the building and all the entrances and exits looking for me, and that it was only chance that he happened to drive down to the correct address to see if I was there instead. I was glad to get to and from my appointment, but it was seriously more hassle than it was worth, and I won't be using that transportation service again.

That really stinks! A temp. bus driver when I was in elementary school did that once. To a kid! Like I didn't know where I lived! Nice having a pair of angry parents in your corner though

Maybe give them another chance so you can make your appointments? It can't hurt. Good luck with your pregnancy!

In most municipalities, there is a government agency that licenses transportation companies. Call them and file a complaint.

Try them again, but don't get into the vehicle until you have confirmed where they are taking you, or refuse to leave the vehicle if it is not the correct place. Make sure you have your cellphone handy.

      Good luck with the baby!

wait so despite you informing the driver that he was taking you to the wrong place, he refused to stop and carried on driving.

        Yeah that's not legal.

          Yeah that's not legal.

          I'd file a formal complaint.

My insurance also offers transportation, I have yet to use it only because they use only one certain company and I heard they are a nightmare, and more trouble than they are worth. Thankfully I can ask a family member for a ride, I just give them gas money.

I would definately file a complaint.

Seriously they could get themselves in a shitstorm of legal issues over that.

The words "unlawful imprisonment" could perhaps light a fire under their asses

I was told by the driver that his log said I was to be dropped off at The Children's Hospital so that was the only place he was authorized to drop me off and if I wanted to go to another location I would need to walk. Now mind you after he dropped me off at the Children's Hospital he had to turn around and drive past me and the correct building, so it's not like it would have been out of his way or an inconcenience to drop me off at the correct building.

I did file a formal complaint with my insurance company and the transportation company, but the transportation company basically sided with the driver and said it was my insurance company's fault because when they called to pre-authorize the trip, they claim that the insurance company is the one who gave them the wrong address and building, so basically they are trying to pass the buck.

She asked to be dropped off at her real destination, not just to be left out of the car. An unlawful imprisonment case would never fly in this circumstance because the driver will just say she never asked to just be left out where they were, but to return to a place he was not authorized to stop at.

I have been working as a medical transportation driver for a while now.
I do not know what state/area you live in but we do run into this problem on occasion.
Unfortunately, we (speaking for my company) cannot just drop a passenger off at another address. We have GPS tracking on our vehicles. Trust me, they do monitor. We can get in trouble for dropping a passenger off an a different address.
The driver was sucky because he could have called his dispatcher and told them that you needed to go to a different address. In about 99.9% of all cases, they would have allowed him to drop you off where you needed to go.
As far as picking you up, sounds like there was a failure to communicate somewhere.
I would file a complaint with both the insurance company and the transportation company itself.

True, she could have been assed out of a ride back but... "let me out now" is a valid request ...

I can understand the driver taking you to the "booked" location. As the insurance company is paying the cost, they don't want people booking a ride and changing the destination to a "non-treatment related" destination. i.e. Fraudulent use of the transportation allowance.

So you told the transportation company that you wanted to go to "A" and the Insurance company told them to take you to Childrens Hospital, so they listened to the insurance company?

Someone has their head so far up their... Never mind.

One would think that if you gave destination "A" and the insurance company said destination "B", then the transportation company would contact you to confirm the correct destination. BSN did not say how far Children's Hospital was from the correct destination. It sound like it was a "reasonable" (and I use that term loosely) walking distance. I can only imagine what would happen if they had taken you to a destination that was 5 miles from where you wanted to be.
