  • Wherein my Brain to Mouth Filter fails...

So, I quit my job at the discount place. Don't worry, I played professional and gave notice and blah, blah, blah. But the very last day is when I said something I might not have otherwise said to a customer had I been all that worried about my future with the company.

This location is a pretty small store. So we don't have room for neatly organized and lavishly displayed rugs like the kind you might find at a Homegoods or a TJ Maxx. Don't get me wrong, we try to keep the rugs organized by size and price range but as you can imagine it's near to impossible on a seriously busy day.

So a pair of customers wanted a specific rug. It was buried beneath a ton of other heavier rugs, which meant I needed help moving them and there was only one other coworker who was capable of helping me lift. And as it happens we were also seriously understaffed, which meant if we were called to our registers, the customers wanting rugs had to wait.

Well, alas, the customers did get impatient and when they were tired of having to wait, they got ready to leave. My apologies for how everything was run weren't enough. They had to stoop to one parting shot.

SC: You people need to organize your rugs better.

That's about when my brain to mouth filter failed and I returned with this volley.

Me: Well sir, I apologize, but as you can see, the store is fairly small and we're also very busy and understaffed. Now, if you want to invest a couple thousand dollars into the company I'm sure we could expand our operation and then we'd have more room to display the rugs.

They probably went and demanded that you be fired, right? Right?

Well they didn't have much to say. Mostly they just told us to have the rug they wanted ready for when they came back but to be honest, I would think the fact that it was so busy that day would prove that we're hardly hurting for anyone's business. Oh, and they were super specific about the rug they wanted.

They wanted, "The one on the bottom of the pile."

I don't know, I just think I'll be lucky enough if I don't run into these people at my current job. The Big Red Bullseye I'm at is just down the street from where this discount place is and I've all ready been recognized once by a regular.

Is that the one you can't see the pattern of until after it is removed? If so, that any same size and color rug and tell them it was on the bottom. Well, your former co-workers can anyway.

If they wanted it that badly, they would have been removing the other rugs (and blocking the entire aisle with them). They probably just wanted to be idiots. They succeeded quite nicely.

The 'you people' thing is always enough to get my back up.

I went off on a guy at WalMart today who was bitching out employees and made the mistake of uttering that phrase.

              I won't thread-jack though, I'll start a thread later.

Ross? I just quit there about a week ago and this scenario sounds very.. very familiar. They wonder why turnover is so high. I lasted two years... somehow.
No, I do not work here, yes I am open, No, it is not free, every item we had "in the back" has been eaten by drunken sailors. Now that we've covered the basics, how may I help you?

The store is Rhode Island based and they don't have anything out where you are as far as I know.
