  • More Chatter at the Movies

So the other week I went to see "John Carter." (I thought it was all right, and went in knowing that changes had already been made, so I didn't get bent out of shape about it. But I digress.)

Random guy comes in with his girlfriend, who chatters quietly with him during the movie. For the most part, it wasn't too bad, but she eventually started to get louder and more frequent, until I finally had enough.

I quietly got up, went over to them, and said, firmly: "Could you please stop talking?"

It worked. She shut up, and I was able to watch the rest of the movie in peace.

You were much nicer than I would have been. I absolutely hate movie talkers and texters with the fire of a thousand burning suns.

Oh, I know what you mean.

I won't quit going to the movies because it's what I consider a luxury, but damn if I don't cross my fingers and rub my belly before I go into the theater, hoping everyone will just shut the hell up and not bring their kids with them.

We've started going in the middle of the week to the earliest show. It's not uncommon for us to be the only one in the theater.

You really can't ask for a better movie watching atmosphere.

I have a habit of going to the movies when there are only a few other people are there. It's primarily a coincidence, but it's certainly a good one, as I absolutely hate it when other people talk in the cinema. Seriously, seeing a movie at the cinema is pretty darn expensive, so wouldn't you want to make the most of it by, oh I don't know, actually watching the freaking movie?

I actually recall one instance when a couple of people were being particularly bad, and were kicked out with about twenty minutes left in the movie. When it did actually finish, they were still out there, complaining to an employee who was escorting them out of the premises. I recall the conversation as follows.

SC: Come on, you go to the movies so you can talk to your friends!
Employee: No, you go to the movies to see a movie.

          Good times.

I always try to go to the movies near the end of the film's run and on a Sunday night. That generally means an empty cinema and less kids as it's on a school night.
