  • Polite thief??

This story was relayed to me by the security guard that works in the mall I work in.

Apparently, 2 days ago there was a theft in the jewelry store of about 4000$ worth of merchandise. It was in plain daylight, and everything is locked away, so how did he do it without doing a smash and grab?

Well, he was being helped by a sales lady trying on two very expensive pieces of gold jewelry (a chain and the matching bracelet I believe). He asked the lady if the pieces looked good on him, and when the lady said yes, he replied with: "OK, thank you!"

Then he walked out of the store and mall, STILL WEARING THE PIECES!

Luckily, the police caught the guy that same evening, I suppose they identified him using the security cameras. I don't know if the pieces were recovered.

A lot of jewelry thieves work like that. Often they have a partner who distracts the clerk while the one "looking" walks away with the goods unnoticed.

i got hit with that at the jewelry counter once, way back when I worked at Ames in the early 90s.. customer paid for a pair earrings and put them on - well she "tried" to pay for them... then the card was declined. in the confusion she just walked off with them still on.

so yeah, i think it was on purpose.

Had someone try to pull a fast one on me a whole back on some cold sore cream. She even used it before paying for it. But I remembered that she put it in her bag and said "Can I have that back?" My managers were really pleased.

Yeah but the thing is, with this guy, he didn't even bother trying to walk away unnoticed. He just said thanks and walked away.

Sometimes the most brazen stuff works!

One of our jewelry stores got hit by a guy; was nice, over the top, a little kooky but that was all to be distracting. They were so focused on how crazy he acted and the fact that he was wearing a pair of glasses on his face and a pair perched on his head that nobody in the store remembered what his face actually LOOKED LIKE! So security had no clue who to be looking for!

Brazenness is the key - grab a big ticket item & head for the exit with a sense of purpose.

You can go ANYWHERE if you're holding some files and look like you know where you're going.

Just make sure you're holding the right kind of files. For example, if you want to get into a machine shop unnoticed, make sure you're holding MILL BASTARD files.
