  • The pumps are open even if the store (and the SC's mind) are closed.

Was going to post this here as it is a similar tale to this...

But when I realized that this was getting a bit long-ish I decided to move it here in Sightings.

A friend of mine works at a gas station that closes at 11pm. The pumps on the other hand are kept on and active for Credit/Debit card customers 24/7.

They have to, they also have fleet card contracts with several local government agencies, police and a few commercial customers.

There are very large and lighted signs that clearly state this. They are on the pumps, they are on the building and they are on the sign that is visible from the road. But as this is Customer's Suck, we all know what these retardicons do (or more to the point, not do) with signs.

It's 11pm on a Friday and I'm there to pick up my friend. He closes the register, tosses the money envelope into the safe's envelope slot, shuts off the lights, sets the alarm, walks outside and finally locks the door.

Enter one such redardicon who is in a screaming rage about the fact that he <gasp> had the aduacity to close his place of business right at closing time. Actually by the time he locked the door it was 11:10pm.

Now making this even more interesting is the fact that the woman is holding her credit card in her hand while she is demanding that he open the store back up so she can get some gas and how unfair that "the only gas station in town..." (apart from the WaWa, the 7-11, the Sheetz, the Dash-in, and the FastStop...all 24/7 gas station/convenience stores within the same quarter-mile strip of road by the way)

...was going to close on her and leave her stranded.

My friend tried to explain that she could use her card at the pumps and was even willing to show her how. But she was having none of that. She ranted and raved that it was in poor business practices to leave a customer stranded with no means to get gas at this hour of night (remember the other 5 24/7 gas stations all within line of sight of this station).

What made this so funny was the several fleet vehicles, a couple of police prowlers and dozens of vehicles pulling into the various pumps, getting fuel and driving off (gas is usually 3-5 cents cheaper there)...all while she was saying that it is impossible for her to get fuel at this gas station.

After a while my friend just apologized, got in my car and we drove off. He did call his boss's cell phone and let him know what happened. His boss assured him that when he meant shut down at 11pm he means shut down at 11pm. Period, end of discussion. So offering to show the woman how to use the card reader was more than adequate customer service and if she was too stupid to listen she can just sit there until they open or go to the (say it with me boys and girls) other 5 gas stations that are open 24/7 and are in line of sight of this one.

if she's that blind to obvious signs... how the hell did she ever get a license?

Methinks she was mad because her precious routine was disrupted. Maybe she only goes to that gas station and wants a human to yell at if something goes wrong with her gas purchase.

There a people, my mom, who believe it isn't safe to pay at the pump. My mom gets upset if my dad pays at the pump. He has to pay inside if she is with him, otherwise she is obsessive on their bank account. She won't even bank online.

It's probable she didn't have enough left on the card for the hold.

Maybe she's one of those people who believes that if you try your maxed-out card at enough places, one of them will magically accept it....and she had already tried the other places. Some people really are that stupid.

Actually, your mum has a point. Before my family moved to where we are now, there was a real mess where we used to live.

The guy who serviced the credit card slots in the pay-at-the-pump machines at about 70% of the machines in the town was able to rip off card details from people & steal nearly £500,000 before they managed to shut him down. They shut him down quite quickly - it was a large town.

Just goes to show, all you need is one bad apple.

Regardless. There were 5 other gas stations nearby. All of them are 24/7, all of them convenience stores with real people behind the counter.

If that was the only reason for the hissy freak out, then she's still a twat for not cutting through the McDonald's parking lot (which is part of a rather long and connected series of parking lots) and going to the WaWa that was on the other side.

He was nice. I would have had the overnight employee deal with her. Over the PA system.

We had one like that in my local medium city in the UK- several of the directors had their cards cloned at a petrol station - however this was the in store terminals that were the problem. We never got told who they nabbed for it (employee/servicer/not authorised) but it was confirmed that was the source after about the 6th card in a few months.
I am so SO glad I was not present for this. There would have been an unpleasant duct tape incident. - Joi

The gas station I worked at was the same way.

I used to get pissed at the amount of people who'd pulled up after close and walk up to the window and press their cards or money up against the window. You can pay at the pump. I realize the suck involved with pay at the pump, believe me, I do, I refuse to do it myself, that's why I go to 24/7 gas stations like Kwik Trip where I can pay inside.
