This happens far more than it should here in the big city, but luckily most sucktomers realise that as soon as the driver shuts off the engine it's time to debark before the other passengers turn on them...

I've been on the bus a few times when a person got on and wouldn't pay. The bus driver pulled over, tried to get the non passenger off, and calls the cops.
Only once did the bus driver call the cop (or it could have been dispatch). He stopped the bus, opened the door, left the bus and pulled out his cell phone. People started heckling the person who wouldn't pay and she eventually got off.

One time that I was on the bus, a group of people kept pulling the stop cord for laughs. after a few times, the bus driver refused to move the bus.

The pranking group demanded that the driver do his job and drive the bus. He told them to get off the bus since there are rules in place and they weren't following them.

The group called him a racist. The driver then said he would call the police and let them settle the problem. The group ran right off the bus before the driver could even finish speaking.

I had that incident on the bus that I mentioned in another post (guy was loudly abusive towards me, in particular, and driver did nothing). What still amazes me is that I've seen bus drivers kick kids off the bus for being foul-mouthed, yet when the driver had a passenger who was drunk, abusive, AND carrying a knife openly, he did nothing.

SC: Well, the bus driver says he can’t take all of us, so one of you is going to have to stay behind.
              Kids: *random cries and begs*
SC: That’s the way it has to be. There’s no room for all of us, so now one of you has to stay here forever.

SC2: And who the fuck are you to ask me that?
D: I’m the driver, and you need to either present me with a pass or ticket, or pay.
              SC2: I don’t pay.
D: Do you have a pass?
              SC2: I don’t have a pass, and I don’t pay.
              D: You need to pay.
SC2: FUCK OFF AND DRIVE THIS FUCKING BUS!!
              Well, that's just unbelievable!!!

I suspect, but as a mere guess only, that the knife had a role in his selective authority.

OM: As a paying customer I DEMAND you remove that woman!
D: Do you not think I want to do that? But I can’t. If I touch her then it’s goodbye job. All I can do is follow policy, keep the bus parked and wait for the police. I cannot leave the wheel and I cannot touch her.
First one, a call to CPS is in order "There's a woman on this bus prepared to abandon one of her children rather than wait for another bus that has space for her whole family".

Second one, too bad there weren't a couple of burly guys on the bus to give the following response: "We don't work for the bus company, so they can't fire US for removing you".
Any fool can piss on the floor. It takes a talented SC to shit on the ceiling.

The openly carrying a knife is all I need to hear to know why. I wouldn't have confronted him, either.

I might have called the cops.

That's the thing - he could have quietly radioed for the police while the drunk was yelling at me, but he didn't. He could have radioed AFTER the guy got off, informing the police of a man who was drunk and carrying a weapon, telling them where the drunk got off the bus, but he didn't do that, either.
