  • GO. AWAY.

I had just started my lunch hour at my job and needed to get gas. I was in a hurry, because I still wanted to be able to eat my lunch and relax a bit before going back to work. I stopped at the first gas station on my way home and ran inside to prepay.

When I walked into the (VERY TINY) convenience store, the one and only cashier was being bothered by a pushy cigarette distributor. (I'm not sure what the job title is - but it's basically people who work for a tobacco company and try to get more space for their specific brand of cigarettes at gas stations.) The woman was going on and on about different products and what the gas station could sell, while the cashier seemed completely uninterested and kept repeating that she couldn't help the distributor as it wasn't her responsibility to decide what to sell in the store.

The distributor would not take a hint. She kept talking and talking, and since the store was so small, she was blocking my path to the cash register. I was getting pissed off, because I'm standing there waiting patiently while she gabs, and the cashier isn't waving me over.

Finally, after about 4 or 5 minutes of waiting, the cashier asks me what I need. I am able to pay and GTFO of there.

SERIOUSLY, distributor lady, what is the problem? Not only are you not listening to the cashier (SHE CAN'T MAKE PRODUCT DEALS - SHE'S ONLY A CASHIER), you're BLOCKING CUSTOMERS by parking your ass in front of the only cash register. Take a hint and get out of the store!

I'd have said excuse me and just pushed past her. After all YOU were the paying customer. I think I'd also call in for the day manager and let them know what the distributor was doing, bet that won't get her more space.

When I first started at m job, I had a few gift vendors like that. I was new so I didn't want to lose my job so I tried to be as polite as possible even though I kept repeating what the girl was telling the cig vendor. It would take a while.

Now, those conversations last about a minute LOL.

Poor girl. You'd think as soon as someone tells you "I don't have buying powers", you'd be asking "well, when's the person with the money in?". Makes no sense.

they're probably hoping to wear the cashier down into saying, "ok" just to get rid of them... and then telling the owner "your company agree to THIS" ... cos technically it would be true.

          THIS.

An uncomfortable number of sales reps (and yes, the ones for the tobacco companies do seem to be the worst of the lot) have this 'don't take no for an answer' mindset and will pull crap like this.

When I worked in a convenience store, I got them ALL THE DAMNED TIME. My manager was absent most of the time because he didn't want to deal with them.
I got pretty good at getting rid of them, though. Any rep wanting to sell something was given the store's phone number and the time(s) the manager was usually available. If that didn't work, a more strongly-worded response - "You will have to take that up with the store manager, WHO ISN'T HERE." And if that didn't work, three simple words:

          "Dude, leave. NOW."

Would be interesting if a C-store didn't carry either of the "big 2" soda companies' products. Pushy tobacco rep comes in and starts badgering the cashier (and blocking customers from getting to the register). Conversation goes as follows:

Cashier: Do you know why RC is the only cola we sell?
Rep: No - and why should I care?
Cashier: It's because both the Coke and Pepsi reps are as pushy as you.

Let the rep figure out the unstated message.
Any fool can piss on the floor. It takes a talented SC to shit on the ceiling.
