  • Were we the SC?

My girlfriend and I went to a semi well known restaurant the other night. They seated us at a 2ft square table and we ordered. 45 minutes later our food had not arrived so we asked the waitress what was taking so long. Her response? "Oh well, if you dont like it so much, you can just leave". We were like , we would have left right then and there if it werent for the fact that we were hungry and had waited so long. We did not tip very much and left shortly after our meal arrived.

How unbelieveably rude!! All she needed to do was answer your query. And I wouldn't have tipped more than 5%.

Frankly, maybe I'd be an SC, but I'd have not tipped at all, and asked for a manager.

I feel that when you go to a restaurant you're paying for decent food, a clean environment, and a civil if not pleasant service. You did not get what you paid for.
Occasional mistakes & delays happen, and as long as they're corrected or explained/apologized for, no problems, doesn't bother me. But that was just way beyond acceptable under any circumstance.

      Madness takes it's toll....

Exactly. I know that we on this board have dealt with so many SCs that we tend to go to the opposite extreme: we put up with crap we shouldn't have to because we don't want to be labeled "Sucky Customers". The problem is, there are also Sucky Employees, and they can cause as many problems as Sucky Customers.

In your situation, a Sucky Customer would've been screaming his head off after ten minutes, knocked over the salt and pepper shakers and verbally ripped the waitress several new ones. A non-sucky customer would've asked for a manager and discussed the situation with him/her. If no satisfactory resolution, take it further upstairs to Corporate.
I don't have an attitude problem. You have a perception problem.

Wait a second. I don't understand. You tipped her?

Sometimes, telling a consumer "If you don't like it, you can just leave" is appropriate. But not when they've been waiting at a restaraunt for 45 minutes.
Customers should always be served . . . to the nearest great white.

            Fixed that for you.

No, that was major employee suck, not you.

Employee was definitely sucky there. All they had to do was answer. Or give a "I'm not sure, let me check with the kitchen". (And then follow through.)

If I was in that situation and stayed for the food, I would have left a tip of about $0.25. Just enough for the waitress to know I wasn't simply forgetting to tip. She was downright rude.

Dont worry, we tipped maybe $1 and then filled out a complaint card as well as called corporate about her. We also never went back.

Depending on how busy the restaurant was, its staff situation at the time, and what you ordered, it could've taken 45 minutes or more for them to get to your order.

I once ate at a Dennys in Fort Collins, CO. The wait for my food was at least an hour, and could've been an hour and a half. They were super understaffed for some reason and there was basically one guy, who I guessed was a manager, running his tail off.

Thing was, he was super apologetic about the wait. No "if you dowanna wait then GTFO." I would not have left a tip for that waitress either.

It wasnt busy and we ordered Burgers, this being a burger restaurant. They gave us the worst seat in the house, the table as I mentioned was 2ft square and situated right next to the entrance.

Yeah, none of that should have happened.

I mean, I have waited 45 minutes for a burger. But it was in West Yellowstone, MT a few years ago. In a small, packed cafe in tourist Mecca.

Yeah, you never know what might be happening behind the scenes to cause unexpectedly long delays, from understaffed due to sick kitchen staff to malfunctioning burners on the stove. I'd never not give a restaurant a second chance just because of a long wait, as long as the wait staff were nice about it.

I was at a steak place once, the people in the booth next to us had evidently been waiting a while (not sure if they had complained, or not), and I overheard the waiter make a special trip to their table and tell them "it won't be long now, I promise, they're killing the cow as I speak"

No, you were not sucky. The waitress was. Had she told me to leave, I would have done just that, and followed up with a phone call to her manager and the corporate office. I have waited some time for food before, but there was always a reasonable explanation, such as being short staffed, followed by an apology. Her behavior towards you was reprehensible.

I wouldn't have tipped that rude waitress a damn cent at all! I would have said to myself after her rude response, "Screw this damn place. I'm going somewhere else!" A 45-minute wait time and still no food? How busy was this place? And why couldn't the waitress at least try to say, "Your food is coming up!"

I'm glad I've been denied that kind of behavior from a waitress whenever I go to a restaurant. They are usually so cool and polite so I end up tipping as high as 25 or even 30 percent on a meal.
