I was in the grocery at the deli counter waiting to buy some lunch meat. Suddenly a short blocky guy with gray hair started taking loudly to one the guys slicing meat. At first I thought they were friends, but it quickly became obvious that he was just an abusive jerk.
SC: “You need to get a REAL job!”
MG: “How do you want that sliced?”
SC: “You wouldn’t know a day’s work if it bit you in the ass?”
(The guy waiting on me started rolling his eyes and the target of the jerk was looking like he wished the earth would swallow him.)
Me: Jerk was pointing and about to start yelling again. I’d had it, so I tuned up. “You know I never believed that anyone was actually stupid enough to say something like that.” I got louder to make sure he heard me. “You should be able to throw people out of here when they talk to you like that.”
The guy waiting on me gave me a big grin. The jerk had gotten noticeably quiet. As I walked past him, I stopped and looked at him. “You should work back there for a while and see what it’s like having to put up with jerks like you. They HAVE a real job!” He got very interested in the bread in front of the meat counter so I left.
I hate confrontations but I couldn’t just stand there and let that creep get away with being abusive. I was really glad he opted to shut up, but I’m glad I said something. Maybe he will think twice before acting like an ass in public again.
Sheesh...some people....

to the meat cutter for just responding to the first line of abuse with "How did you want that cut?" Cool as a cucumber, that one.
