  • Sorta Sighting, a bit of Karma, & good things come to those who aren't SCs

This is a bit long, but then, when do I ever post anything short? Why use one word when there are dozens of words in the thesaurus sitting there all lonely and unused?

Ok, no idea where to put this, mainly about no SC (well, one touch of SC, maybe). So if there's a better spot, guess I'll see it moved

Had a Taco Bell craving (and an "I don't want to cook" feeling) this evening, so decided to give in, haven't had fast food at all in ages.

So drove to our nearby Bell, and the drive thru was quite long. Oh well, guess eveyone had the same craving, and no one else wanted to bother to go in either. No problem.

Ok, momentary side trip here, but just wanted to say, you guys have gotten me to look at a few things a bit differently - though I've worked with customers, I only worked in actual retail years and years ago. I can identify with a lot of what is said on here about SCs, but didn't always realize how retail workers felt about some things. I had in the past sort of brushed off the "Hi, how are you?" type greetings when entering stores, ordering take out, etc. as basically being employees on more or less auto pilot, saying what they'er told to say, and being, in real life, a bit on the shy side (honest), I admit I tended to more or less brush it off, figuring they didn't expect a response. But after hanging out here a while, I've realized some of you do consider it a bit rude, like you aren't being recognized as individuals, so I try very hard now to speak up with a nice "I'm doin' ok, how are you today?" or something like that.

Ok, back to the story. So maybe that's why I really noticed when, my window down as I was next, I saw the guy in front of me pull up to the speakers, and with no other response to their greeting, heard him bark (and I do mean bark, very loud & rough, "BOX!". I mean, it really sounded rude. I know they have some sort of box of several items, a combo type ting they call The Box on commercials, but geez. I'm not even sure he waited to have it repeated or verified before pulling onward, I didn't hear him say anything else.

So I order my food, the line is moving actually quie quickly for the number of cars, I'm at the window before I know it, and the girl gives me the total - which is a couple of dollars less than what it has been on the little ordering screen. So I must have looked pretty confused, said "umm, I thought it was a bit more than that?" She says "didn't you have x & x?" and I said, no I had y & y (and yes, I was polite and matter of fact, no big deal) and she gets a deer in the headlights look and says "I just gave your your order to the guy who was in front of you". I admit, the first thing that went thru my mind (but I did NOT day it) was oh, shit, that guy didn't sound like the type who's gonna be very nice when he realizes he has the wrong order and not his BOX). So I'm doing my best to convey that it isn't a big deal to me, she very quickly yells my order to the kitchen, apologizes, then shuts the window to talk to someone else, opens it a minute or two later and double checks what drink I had, and as she hands it to me, and I reach for my wallet, she says "oh, I'm not charging you for this" Next thing I know she's handing me my food, I don't think I waited more than three extra minutes total, I told her she didn't need to do that, and she just smiled, so I thanked her profusely, and told her it was no big deal, mistakes happen now and then.

So I got a free dinner, and I would never have even dreamed of complaining anyway, it was just a mix up, and like I said, I didn't even have to pull over and wait or anything.

And it did seem a bit of instant karma that the guy in front of me didn't get his BOX I just hope he didn't call or come back and really be obnoxious (how he couldn't tell that a mexican pizza & a taco in a bag wasn't his BOX I've no idea).

    Madness takes it's toll....
    Please have exact change ready.

That guy deserved to have his order screwed up. (1) There are usually a couple different box combos, at least at our TB, and (2) there are options you have to select with the box, such as drink, hard or soft taco, etc. You can't just say "Box" and be done. (Hubby orders those combos all the time...possibly more so he can play with the box than eat the actual food inside....)

Since the box combos are always changing it seems, hopefully the SC didn't even notice. It would suck to deal with that obnoxious ass any more than minimally necessary.

And...free food! Yay! Last time I got free food, it was 'cause the pizza place forgot to put our stuffed breadsticks in the oven. We didn't ask, but the shift manager came out with a voucher for free stuffed breadsticks for our next visit.

Thoroughly O/T; had to post before it went out of my head...

Have you ever read a book called The Talking Parcel by Gerard Durrell? There's a character in the book whose annual job is to sit down and recite the dictionary, and he tries to use as many words as possible in his normal speech, else all the poor words will fade away from underuse. They all 'need an airing, the poor dears' It's what your opener reminded me of. ^^

The idea to yell a one-word order at someone would never, ever occur to me. Ridiculous. Hope he didn't enjoy his Not-Box.
