  • Ann Summers triumphs over Marks and Spencer...

Some suck, but thankfully, also some awesome

    Background...
I'm a busty-ish girl, but having read some of the bra dilemma stories here, I think it would be safe to say that I'm not as, hmm, well-endowed as some of the ladies here. And generally speaking, I've never had a big problem hunting for bras before.

I can't remember the last time I was measured, but I do remember that the number 37 stuck around, and I've been wearing 36C for years. 37 also made sense because most of my major measurements, although they fluctuate, tend to be odd numbers (37, 31, 39). Having said that, I haven't actually wrapped a tape around myself for about 3 years, when I was being measured for my corset.

I always bought my bras from Peacocks, for the last 6 or 7 years; before I worked there, I liked the cheap, pretty (and comfortable options) and while I worked there, I loved how I could get 20% discount on them But I did notice that I had a tendency to...spill...out of the front a bit.

Well, being as most of my bras are looking a bit worn, and the spilling thing had been going on for long enough, I decided it was time to have a proper underwear shop. Since my store closed, I popped into the next nearest Peacocks a few times, but their selection was never as good as ours, and their size range always sucked. At work before, I could at least always get dibs on a 36C (seemed to be a popular size), but there never seemed to be any of my size at the other store, at least not ones that I liked.

    Bra Suck
So I popped down town and went to my local Marks and Spencer, which is of course, quite well known for having a good lingerie selection, a fitting service and a wide range of sizes. One of my friends who is something like a G cup pretty much relies on them, although she was also not exactly a happy customer. I'm sure many of you busty ladies know full well that if you're busty, buying bras that fit tends to be an expensive affair, and my friend says she's usually spend £20 a time on a single bra...that usually also snaps after a month, and she's now too embarrassed to take them back for refunds because its happening nearly every time. She's also been measured several times and has had a completely different measurement everytime. But me, being naive, decided that my much more manageable size shouldn't be an issue...right?

    Wroooong....

I went into their lingerie department where I found a few dummies displaying some very lovely sets. My aim was to get at least one sexy bra (pretty silky, lacey kinda thing) and at least one practical, nice bra, preferably in black. So I started to hunt and I quickly found that practical and ugly was the main theme, despite the dummies. The department wasn't dead, but it was far from busy also, even though a queue was quietly emerging from the fitting rooms.

So I hunted and hunted. None of the colours were what I liked, but I did see a few nice practical ones that might have been ok, even though they certainly were not cheap. No staff are visible at all during this time, so I pick up a 36C in the ones that were okay-ish and then went to the fitting room, in hopes of finding someone to help me. The queue was much shorter now. I peered around and asked the lady ahead of me "Are there any staff there?" She said no.

Great start. Well, I go trying to hunt for an assistant, and after a while, I find one, assisting a woman and her young pre-treen daughter. I browse nearby while she finishes up giving them advice, and then she starts apparently tidying. So I approach her and ask "Is it at all possible to get a measurement?"

To which she just says "No, there's no one else up here, and I'm already with a customer." And then carried on tidying, like I wasn't there.

I was pretty stuck. I kinda needed to be measured, and despite her claim, she clearly wasn't doing much. And even if she was with another customer (on which I call bullshit), surely she could have offered to get back to me? I mean, I really did need help, I was having trouble just PICKING a bra, let alone getting a size. So I stood there a bit gormlessly for a sec, while she ignored me, blinked, and then said "Ok then." Then I (admittedly, rather pettily) dumped the bras nearby (she looooved tidying so much after all ) and walked right out.

And went straight to Ann Summers, 3 doors down.

    Bra Awesome
I wasn't really intending on going in here, because its very expensive, and tends to run more into the not-so-practical side . A cami/bustier I saw in there was £60 alone. But I thought I'd give it a try. I'd bought a suspender belt in there last year and while I hadn't needed much help, it had been a good experience.

The store was a little busy. I approached the fitting rooms where before I even spoke, the assistant spotted me and greeted me. I asked "I know its a little busy, but is there any chance of getting a measurement?" To which she said, absolutely, of course, as long as I didn't mind waiting a few minutes as the fitting rooms were full. I was waiting less than 5 minutes, during which I had a very friendly chat with the assistant, gave her a little background on my bewb issue, and then told her I had just been in Marks and Spencer and pretty much turned away. To which she, and a colleague, then told me that I was far from the first customer to have come in and said M&S had been crap!

She lead me into a fitting room and then began measuring. "You were right about the band size, you are a 36" she said. Then she did the cup, paused thoughtfully and announced: "Double D."

Me:"I'm no way a double-d!" (Said in disbelief, not rudeness lol)
Assistant: "Yep To be honest, I knew you weren't a C the minute I saw you! Same thing happened with me, I was wearing 34 C for years and it turns out I'm an E!"

So I start shopping. They have a good deal, with a lot of the bras being 30% off, and some being on a 2 for £25 deal. I found a lovely purple silk-and-black-lace one that was not on offer but screamed BUY ME XD The other assistants were really helpful, helping me find pretty things. I tried on about 6 or 7 in the end, and it transpires that I'm probably more a 36D rather than a 36DD as the latter was a bit gappy. But I was so surprised to find I was putting a D-cup on and it was actually fitting! O.O It came down to 2 in the end; in the end, I just bought the purple and some matching knicks, and I'm going to go back another day soon to see if they get more in 36D (one of the ones in the 2 for £25 offer were out of stock in that size).

I told the staff I was really impressed by the service and thanked them all. And you know, I wasn't actually intending to spend £44 on one bra and one pair of knicks (yeah, like I said, expensive) BUT after having such great service, I WANTED to spend my money theere I'm actually thinking of writing a letter

guh, bra shopping. I feel your pain. Can't believe (okay, can, but it blows) that M&S--or any store looking to make money--would be such jerks about helping you buy something! That assistant was awful. Glad you found something at the store with helpful folks! (even if it was pricey)

As for sizing. Whew. Yeah, cups sizes can totally change throughout one's life, plus fittings are often wrong unless you've got someone who knows what they're doing. Also, if the band size is different the cup sizes have different volumes--a 36 C (me, mostly) is closer in volume to a 38/40 B than C. Similarly, if I dropped a band size or two, I'd probably end up a D. Top that off with some lack of consistency in manufacturing sizes and any bra shopping trip is just a joy!

Well, that would explain your spillage problem.

Yeah, and guys don't get it. Hubby just decided recently finances were on the up a bit, so it was time to finally replace all of his well-worn "personal" garments. Five minutes in the discount store to choose which of a couple of brands, and make sure the sport socks were crew not knee height, briefs not boxers, and the undershirts were sleeved, with the necktype he liked. A quick calculation on how many multi=packs to have enough from laundry day to laundry day (with a couple extra) and he was done.

And now he can't understand why, when I'm always grumbling about needing new bras, I don't just pop out and get all new things like he just did.

          Madness takes it's toll....

I have such a hard time shopping for bras, and pretty bras? HAH! I get practical and ugly, that's the only choices for me, and not all my size fit right. I have to try on like 10 bras to find 2 that fit right. Then add that I live in an area where there is a high Asian population and I have problems finding places that even stock my size.

I'm glad you were able to find your correct size and get a cute bra.

Bra shopping can be a bit of a nightmare, particularly if you don't fall into whatever corporate deems the "average" size, whether that's above or below the standard scale.

Merriweather, please feel free to pass the following on to your hubby. It's my bible for when I have to go bra shopping, & contains everything I've been forced to pick up over the years from being an unusual shape in - well - every dimension, up, down & sideways.

When fitting yourself for a bra, you need to remember the following things:

The back band is very important. It's the main support, & unless you're one of the unusually large cup sizes (E & above) it should be able to support your boobs on its own. If it can't then you need a different bra, as it's just there to look pretty rather than support your assets.

It mustn't pinch, as that causes its own problems, but it must fit firmly around your back. If it starts riding up towards your shoulder-blades, it's too loose & not giving you the support you need.

When it comes to the cups, everyone has different shaped boobs. Some people have broad boobs that don't stick out a lot; some have thinner boobs that push forward a lot. That means that the same style may fit 3 different women at 3 different sizes, even if they're all measured at a 34G (for example). There's a particular style of bra that's massively popular that I can't wear, for example, as I'm quite short in the back, so the underwire's come up just a little bit too far behind my boobs & prod me just under my armpits.

It's obvious what to do if you're getting flappy bits in the cups, but being tight can be less obvious. You need to check 3 main points. Under the arms - are you getting bulgy bits where the cup comes up from under your armpits? Between your boobs - is the central support sitting flat against your breastbone? Over the tops of your boobs - are you getting the dreaded "4 boob effect" over the top? Any of these mean you need to go up a cup size.

Also, remember that your hormones can affect your cup size. Some women can go up or down by as much as a cup size depending on what point of their cycle they're in, so it's not unusual to find that a bra that's a perfect fit can fit strangely 2 weeks later.

And a last note for Rabbit's busty friend - tell her to try Debenhams or Bravissimo. They're both pricey, but I've never once had to return a bra for a failure of structural integrity as they know to source from brands that add extra support (usually completely invisible when compared to smaller cup sizes) that will allow the bra to last. They also have staff that are fantastic when it comes to helping you get a good fit.

They also don't get why they cost so much. The don't know the number of pieces and the amount of work that goes into making one.

Bras I've found are like any other article of clothing. Find one you like in the size you think is right and a size up and down and try on until you find the right one.

I hate going bra shopping with a passion, especally since they can be oh so expensive. Even the ones the ones that are of the off the wall brands aren't cheap!

Although, the best bra purchase I've had was a black backless/strapless bra from Fredicks of Hollywood -- needed to get one for senior prom. Expensive and was only a one or two time use deal, but one of the most comfortable bras I've ever worn.
Eh, one day I'll have something useful here. Until then, have a cookie or two.

"Ex-Microsoft Employees Create Algorithm for the Perfect-Fitting Bra" ... "And still hasn't discovered how to unsnap one"
Give it time, they'll introduce a voice activated fastener.
And they will name it Snappy and it will pop up all the time and ask you if you need help.

As a Britisher, I agree that M&S are crap. I've been measured twice and told the same size (36B) which DOESN'T FIT. "But that's the size you are!" Yeah right. I'll go with what actually feels comfortable, thanks. I will buy plain & practical from there, as that's pretty much all they're good for, and then go for pretty bras elsewhere!

I got measured at JC Penney once and was told "36C." I replied, "That's interesting, seeing as I'm currently wearing a 38D."

I've given up on normal bras. Sports bras are the only bra I wear now but I can't wear racerbacks because of my shoulders.

I get the shoulder problems with all bras they keep falling off no matter what bra I wear even if the size is correct. I can get my boobs fitted but never my shoulders and I can't wear x backs because the pull on my neck.

Guess I'd better start looking for corsets.
