  • Who are you to judge someone for BEING HEALTHY?

I'm having lunch @ BK. A little while ago I saw an old man bike up. I've seen him around. It's fairly hot--80s maybe. This other older Judgy lady (we'll call her J) and the twenty-something employee were asking about his bike riding. Apparently he's 73 and does this every day, even in snow. I assume, then, he can handle it. Good for him! More than I can do...Well, after he left J went on and on w/ employee about how it's hot, and older people shouldn't try to hang on to youth by doing stuff like that, and that's how people have heart attacks. Well, I jumped in (to the cashier, as J and her hubs were sitting behind me) and said some stuff about how everyone is different and some can handle it, and Americans have heart attacks from eating badly & living sedentary lives. She had agreed with J, but saw my point. I mean, really--you can be 73 and healthier than a younger person. J looked fit, but I think she felt outdone and needed to justify her lack of bike experience.

Sooo ... even though the elderly man does this daily, and appears to be fine with it, J thinks he should spend his days sitting and rocking??

My grandfather was used to hot weather: he spent 30 years working in a coal-fired foundry, regardless of the heat indoors OR out. He would be outside when his wimpy descendents were hanging around the air conditioner. And he died at 98.

I think you're right about J's motivations: sounds like a bit of sour grapes there, even if she herself is fit.

Good for you for speaking up, and kudos to the cashier for rethinking things.

My former next-door neighbor used to bike ride to Pathetica to shop. He was still doing it when he was in his 90s. He couldn't see or hear very well, but his feet worked.

I think it is the same as people who make fun of overweight people who are exercising: they feel bad that these people are trying to get healthier when they theselves aren't doing anything of the kind.

One of our regulars, who happens to be the father-in-law of our electronics specialist, still rides his bike to the store daily when the weather's good. He's pushing 90, and might be even be over 90. I dunno. He's in pretty damn good shape for his age.

A relative of ours was riding ATV's in his 90's. He died of a heart attack doing so, but only because he was riding alone, it got stuck, and he tried to push the thing out on his own

I knew a gent died at 77. Rode his motorcycle everyday there wasn't snow on the road. Married to a woman 30 years his junior and had 3 kids with her. That guy LIVED everyday until he died. We should all be so lucky.

When I was in my late teens, I wasn't allowed to drink with my gran, who was then in her eighties. My gran thought I was a wimp who couldn't hold my liquor.

There's a guy that lives down the street from my grandparent's old house (now my uncles >.<)

He's in his late 80's now. Never owned a car. Rides his bike everywhere he needs to go. Every time I'm in that part of town I see him.

My grandfather had so much respect for him, because he looks like he's in his 50's, and with all the errands he runs, he's always in great shape.

Wonder what she's make of our Naked Guy? He's got to be closing in on 70. He's in the shape he's in because he walks everywhere.

He's almost seventy? I used to walk everywhere and was never as fit as that.

Kind of ironic that she was eating at BURGER KING and talking about heart attacks and eating badly. ^_^

There's an 80-ish year old man in my neighborhood who rides his recumbent bike EVERYWHERE. I hope to be half as energetic as he is when I'm his age!
