  • I fail at mind reading.

This thread was inspired by veniteangeli's thread in Sucky Customers.

I was in Vegas over the last weekend, and decided to play some blackjack. I'm not a much of a blackjack player, but I do know the rules that the House operates under.

I sit down at a $5 table ($5 is the minimum bet) in the early seat. There's another player sitting next to me in the seat after me. We were the only players at this table. Right away he starts bitching about the player he played with before. I wasn't paying too much attention to him. I assumed that he was bitching because the previous player was rude.

So we play. I get a 12, and decide to hit, hoping to improve on that. Twatwaffle didn't like that. He starts bitching up a storm. Apparently I was supposed to read his mind so I'd know "his rules" that I'm not supposed to hit on 12. I had no idea what he was planning (lack of mind reading). I got a King, and busted. Twatwaffle kept bitching. Apparently I was supposed to read his mind, and not hit, so he'd have the king.

He got up from the table after the hand and went over to the security to bitch about me. WTF?!? I decided to lewave after the next hand because Twatwaffle's bitching and complaining ruined my fun. He was still bitching after I left, so I don't know if he was kicked out, but the way he was going, I'm going to bet he was.

What... you're suppose to play in order to let HIM win?

So security's gonna do what... kick you out cos you "made" him lose?

I'm betting he kept on bitching when he found out security isn't going to beat you up for him just cos he's a sore loser

I'm sure Security was very interested in how Twatwaffle knew the card card you were dealt was going to be a king...

This is a classic case of "you play your hand and I'll play mine". Each player is supposed to hit/stand/double down according to what THEY think is best for THEIR hand. You had a 12, you gambled, and lost. That's none of his business.

I got the sense he was complaining post-discovery, as sore losers are known to do.

Buuuuttt... Now that I think about it... I almost hope he got busted for some sorta scam.

Could he have been trying to count cards? That's the only reason I can think of that would lead him to bitch about you hitting and getting "his" King.

Counting cards isn't illegal. Casinos will try and tell you it's illegal, but it's not.

They might throw you out if you start winning, but hey, it's the house's game, isn't it?

Card counting is just a statistical trick to determine whether to hit or old on ones own hand depending on the likelihood of improvement. Other players' choices just change the percentages.

So if that guy was card counting, he sucks at it.

I doubt he was card counting. It was a game with 8 decks. I think he had his own rules, and was pissed when I didn't follow them.

Definitely not card counting. A $5 table doesn’t have a large enough range between the minimum and maximum bet to make card counting effective.

Not that I’ve ever counted cards. What! It’s not illegal! Shut up!

That's right. It's frowned upon. Like masturbating on an airplane.

This is why I hate playing blackjack. It's my fave casino game, but loudmouths like this make me nervous to play at the tables (since I'm basically a shy person) I've been yelled at enough for "messing up their game", or taking a card that would have bust the dealer (so I really try to avoid sitting at third base now) I use the basic common sense hit/stand strategy, nothing fancy or capricious like "I feel a {card} coming - hit me!" nonsense. The ones mouthing off always seem to have no strategy at all, or one only they understand. I especially hate it when I was at the table first, and then they show up and start criticizing my game. Yeah, thanks, I'm been sitting here an hour playing, and I'm a little ahead, so STFU. (yeah, that's what I'd say if I weren't so shy )
Smile, or I'll smack you silly!

I see the Dunning-Kruger effect also happens in casinos.

Very likely he was attempting to card count, failing miserably at it, and blaming everyone except himself.

While card counting is still possible with multiple decks, you'd need to be a math genius and have a flawless memory in order to pull it off. Unless you happen to be an android built by Noonian Soong, its just not going to happen with multiple decks in a game.
