I'm not sure if this belongs here or COC/MIM, but it happened at another store, so I'll say here. This happened at GAP many moons ago.
Our manager gets a call from the manager from another store about 10 miles away. This other manager is known for being a bit of a grouch and not personable at all. She was apparently hysterical and hard to understand, but the manager finally got the whole story of what happened...
It was a slow Saturday morning and the entire first hour only one customer came in. Extremely bored she had a big-gulp on the counter and was simply leaning against the counter not doing anything. Meanwhile, the store was a huge mess, the prior shift hadn't done much cleanup after closing the previous night and the manager didn't bother to clean it up.
She's sucking down her big gulp when a man comes into the store. She barely acknowledges his presence as he approached the counter. The manager, in the most unexcited way, says, "Yeah? What do you want?" while barely looking in his direction.
The man said, "Er... hi, I've got a few questions. Your store looks a tad messy."
She finally looked up at him and asked, "Yeah? So? Do you really care?"
He answered, "Well... yeah, see, I don't know if you recognize me, but I'm Paul Pressler."
She looked at him funny, "Who?"
"Umm... I'm the CEO of GAP."
She finally put two and two together: See, he's the name that's on many of the memos all the managers get. You know, the memos about keeping a professional attitude, keeping the store neat and tidy, being attentive to every customer, not having drinks visible on the counter during opening hours, and being generally personable.
She wanted to give all the region's managers a heads up. Fortunately we were already way prepared for the CEO or anyone for that matter, although there were some little adjustments we made here and there. He never visited our location, though.
From what I understood, the manager did not get fired or even reprimanded for what happened, but the CEO did give her a stern lecture that, had he been a customer, he wouldn't have been happy at her aloof and impolite demeanor. Apparently he wasn't there to scrutinize the store or appear as a secret shopper or anything. He was just in the area on business and thought of just making a surprise visit to a store. He was a tad disappointed in his visit.
