  • Not sure that's your dumpster...

Took the puppers for a walk yesterday. I needed to get some hay for da pig, so we went to the pet store on the way home. The shopping center is shaped like a "U" with parking in the middle, and the back side is facing the neighborhood (really crappy design imho), so we started our trek the long way around the back end of the mini mall to get around to the pet store (which is in the middle of the U...all the way around to get there, then all the way around to go back...why did they take out the pedestrian thru-ways that used to cut through the middle of the building? )

Anyways, just as we were coming up around the edge, I saw a minivan with two gals dumping large bags in one of the store's dumpsters. As I approached, they clambered back in the minivan and sped off.

I'm pretty sure they weren't working for the store.

(When we got there, I bought the pup, who is a 14lbs small dog, a cookie that was meant for a Great Dane, because I always find it hilarious to watch him try and eat those.)

I see this far too often, homeowners too cheap to pay for trash pickup so they dump it in other people's dumpsters. This of course means the businesses have to pay extra tipping fees.

I'd mentioned in another thread about a trash man who, instead of taking the trash he charged homeowner's to pick up to the dump (which costs money), dumped it illegally into mall and strip mall dumpsters. He got caught and it cost him a ton of money and I think his business license as well...

I've heard people say, "What does it matter? They have to get their garbage removed anyway, don't they?"

        Yeah, me too.

I've tried hard to explain that some removal services (Waste Management here) do tips on call - you ring them when it is as full as you want it to get, so obviously that costs businesses money there.
Other companies charge extra for over-full dumpsters.
Sometimes (esp. weekends) municipalities will fine businesses if there are bags outside a dumpster, put there because the bin is full.
So really the only scenario where the business doesn't take a hit is if their removal company does scheduled pickups and they never fill past capacity.

I'm gonna go out on a limb and say that the kind of person who leeches off someone else's trash pickup doesn't go out of their way to research and use only the places where number four holds true.

We lived in an area, not even a town, really, where there was no "official" city trash pickup. There was a person who lived local, owned a small trash truck, and most people paid him a monthly fee to haul off their trash. No official type trash bins, no regulations on what was taken, no recycle sorting - just set bags & whatever else you wanted taken at the curb on the proper day.

What was amusing (or good business sense, actually) was that the same guy also owned the local antique & junk shop, LOL.

We've had recurring problems at the library where someone would dump large amounts of baked beans and macaroni on the ground outside of our trash cans. I don't think we ever found out who was doing it or why, only that it seemed to be happening during the times we were closed.

I once had a neighbour say a similar thing. Then he was having work done on his house and got a skip. One morning while he was watering the garden I took a bag of my rubbish and went to dump it in his skip. He rushed over and demanded to know what I was doing so I quoted the above line to him. He paused, said quietly, "oh, now I see what you mean" and went back to his watering. I took my rubbish back home (I had never planned to dump it in there, only wanted to make the point) and I never heard him talk about dumping his rubbish like that again.

I think it's happening where I live too.

Every so often I see someone drive their trash to the dumpster. At first I just thought it was a resident who was too lazy to walk it up, until I started walking around the area here with the dog. There's plenty of dumpsters here so... I'm really not sure where these people are coming from.

One we specifically think was a sneak-dumper cos my BF & I were getting into the car and the person dumping the trash looked at us and drove off to another area. Hmm... just happened to change her mind about which dumpster to use eh? sure sure

People do that our our mall dumpsters and say the same; you have to get it emptied anyway! Yes, but we pay by weight and how often it has to get dumped, or one of the stores was paying for their own. I made a guy pull his trash back out! He was pissed and complained 'but it's only 2 bags!' I said yes, but that's 2 more that we have to pay for! I've called the police with license plate numbers and address from mail I pulled from bags too.

Oh, isn't it nice how people will just dump bags of trash/old tvs/microwaves in your parking lot when you're closed too?

There's some people in the apartment complex next to mine that throw their trash in my complex's dumpster up at the front of the property (but clearly on our complex property) because they can't be assed enough to walk to their dumpster.

There are some people in my complex that are that lazy. They put the trash bag on the trunk, get in the car, start the car, drive the few hundred feet to the dumpster (and I think they put the cooler on, too, window never goes down), get out, throw bag in dumpster, drive back, and park. In the same amount of time it's taken me to walk to the dumpster and back.

At work we don't generate that much garbage, so our pick up is sheduled for once a month.

Last summer someone dumped a bag of garbage the day after the pick up.

The bag had a 10 lb spoiled beef roast in it.

After 1 week we had to roll the dumpster away from the back door, to the other end of the parking lot.

Even after it was emptied the smell and the flies hung around the dumpster for months.
