  • "I'll just unplug this. I'm sure it's not important."

I thought I was going to be a witness to a murder last Friday night at karaoke.

I was standing around, waiting to do my next song, and bullshitting with someone I had just met, when all of a sudden the music stopped and everything got quiet... well, maybe for about two seconds. Then I hear the DJ screaming at some guy, "What the fuck do you think you're doing? Get the fuck out of here!"

It turned out that some idiot decided to use one of the wall outlets to charge his cell phone. That would have been fine, had he chosen one of the several empty, unused outlets. But no, he had to pick the one that had a plug in it, and pull the plug. Which happened to have the DJ's sound system hooked up to it.

I don't know if the DJ was actually allowed to kick people out, but he was too pissed off to care. The guy just looked at him stupidly and asked him, "Are you serious?"

The DJ yelled back, "Yeah I'm serious you fucking douchebag! You don't do that shit to the DJ!"

The guy turned to his friends and told them, "I guess I have to leave," and walked out.

Now, the DJ is a good friend of mine, and I've been going to his shows for almost 20 years now. He's actually a nice guy as long as you don't piss him off, but I've never seen him flip his shit like that before. But I also know he's very protective of his equipment. About 10 years or so ago, he told me he had about $10,000 invested in the thing, and that was before he added a laptop computer into the mix.

Maybe he overreacted a bit, I don't know. What I do know is the whole thing could have been avoided if the guy had picked an outlet that wasn't currently being used.

I don't think your friend overreacted at all. The guy brought his show to a grinding halt and probably did a bit more than that besides. While settings might be saved while shutting down, that's not a guarantee when the power is cut like that, so all the work he put into it at the beginning of the gig, he might have had to repeat before he could get it back up and running.

Plus, sounds like your DJ friend was in his zone and nothing ticks off an artist like being dragged out of the zone by an asshat. It's like.. having a totally great day and then some dill weed comes through and purposely kills it.

Who the heck just waltzes into a venue and LOOKS for a used outlet to plug up too?! Oh, wait.. forgot where I was for a moment there. I mean, you said there were more outlets that had nothing attached, but this prize winning mouth breather looks for the one that's occupied? WHY?!
If I make no sense, I apologize. I'm constantly interrupted by an actual toddler.

Why go for the outlet that's occupied? Well, if something's plugged in there, the outlet's obviously functioning! Just because it might be in use is no reason to unplug whatever's there to charge your cell phone for those all important texts. DJ's booth in a club? Go for it! EKG machine in a hospital? Of course! The president's microphone at a press conference? Hell yeah!

Hard reboots (i.e. yanking mains/battery power) - An effective way to fix something that is frozen beyond response. How ever some electronics don't like it, and I beleive their is a small chance for it to cause damage to the devices, so I can understand why the DJ flipped.

I don't care what political leaning you are, but seeing someone yank the plug during a press conference and plug in his cell phone to charge would be priceless. Especially for everyone's reactions.

And unplugging seriously expensive equipment at that?

For that kind of obliviousness (yay, that's a word!), I'd say he got off easy.

Why is this moron even charging his cell phone there anyway? He's got no business even thinking about this without getting permission from management!

Agreed. Have people NOT heard of car chargers? I'm pretty sure that most smartphones these days have a USB car charger and/or similar ports so you can plug a HTC charger into a Samsung phone anywhere, as long as someone has the mini/micro USB cable. (and yes, if you have an iPod, you can plug your iPad/iPhone into the cable )

For someone to actually USE A WALL CHARGER in a place other than their home, work or a friends house, that takes balls the size of church bells.

The Ipod/Ipad one is correct, cos they are all about compatibility (Ed - BWAHAHAHA). Nokia are also a great one for using the same power adaptor between phones (last time I checked anyway).

HOW EVER - Please be careful if using another brands mains adaptor. There are micro and mini USB plugs on most phones these days which are universal, but the main factor is the volt/ampage. Some brands do still run on their own power settings related to the battery, and getting it wrong can have warming to explosive results
