I went into the supermarket for a few items yesterday. A few people in front of me was an elderly lady, who pays for something and then turns back into the store. She starts to walk from the cash registers and then comes back to the counter.
EL - elderly lady
C - cashier
M - moi
EL: What's the lottery money going to be tomorrow?
C (scanning items): I'm sorry, what?
EL: What's the lottery money going to be tomorrow?
C: *now confused* I don't know. It's $30 million now, but ...
EL: Well, nobody's won it ...
C: Well, I'm sorry, I don't know what it'll be tomorrow.
EL: Oh. What is it now?
C: (still working with other customers) It's over there, on the sign.
EL: What? Where?
C: On the sign, right over there. (C is working the express lane, so her work area is actually a rectangle, with a counter specifically for lottery tickets, among other things. The sign showing current lottery prizes is solidly attached to the counter and rises about two or three feet above it. It is not within her reach while she's at the cash register; in fact it's behind her. The sign is not a billboard by any means, but nor is it a postage stamp.)
EL: I don't see it. Where is it?
C: Right ... over ... there ...
EL: (walks a few steps away, PAST the sign in question and stares blankly into the floral department. Comes back) I can't find it. Where is it?
Moi: (takes a few steps towards the sign and points ... very pointedly
) IT'S RIGHT THERE. THE BLUE SIGN WITH THE WHITE WRITING. AND THE LOTTERY LOGO. IT READS LOTTARIO $30 MILLION AND LOTTO MAX $30 MILLION.
EL: *squints* Oh. *wanders off*
Good grief. Go online, lady. Or check the newspaper. It's also announced on television.
As I was finishing up my own transaction, the cashier said quietly, "Thanks, by the way."
