That is a bit strange. 99% of the time not making eye contact usually works with those - and mall kiosk workers too.

Last time one of the kiosk workers approached me to try and herd me toward her fancy Black Sea salt (or something) skin care line she grabbed hold of my hand and I almost broke her fingers.

I felt bad afterward but she startled me so I instinctively caught her index finger and nearly snapped it. I managed not to but I don't think that lady will try that method of herding anymore.
