Because I didn't want to hijack this thread.
My parents returned home today from a brief vacation in South Dakota.
One night they ate at a Ruby Tuesday in Mitchell, South Dakota. They both ordered the same thing--sirloin steak with french fries and salad bar. Mom says they were served by a waiter who looked and talked like a complete dumbass (her words, not mine.)
Waiter took their order and they sat. And waited. And waited. And waited. And waited some more. They observed other customers entering the restaurant, being seated, ordering food, consuming food, paying, and then leaving, while they were still waiting. The restaurant was dead that night. I think this happened Monday night.
A group of younger people entered the restaurant and took a seat. Mom observed the waiter going to that table and chatting up the people there, talking about drinks or some such thing. Meanwhile she and dad are still waiting for their food.
Finally, the waiter emerged---with fish and chips. Wrong order. He tried to explain it away as the wrong order being put in by somebody other than himself. He offered them free deserts to "make things right." Then he left my parents to wait some more.
Finally, he arrived with the correct entrees. Mom says he just plonked them down on the table with a cocky attitude, asking her "Is everything okay now? Is everything okay?" He also made no mention of the free deserts he had offered earlier. She told him to "go away so we can eat." She can be a bit unduly snarly at times, but I really don't blame her in this case. The waiter should just be happy my aunt wasn't along on this vacation. She really would've tore that waiter a new one.
By my mom's description, the food wasn't very good either. The steaks were tough, the fries were oversalted, the salad bar was pathetic.
After the meal, the apparent manager of the place came over to drop off the check and ask what had happened. Mom explained she wasn't angry about the wrong order being put in, but about the long wait and being ignored by the waiter. The manager comped their meals.
As mom and dad left the restaurant, the waiter showed his face again to offer a syrupy, inauthentic "Good night now!"
If you're wondering whether my parents left a tip--do bears use a bidet?
