  • Parental Cruise Sightings

So my parents have been away for about a week and a half on a cruise, which was mainly centred around New Caledonia and Vanuatu. And of course, they've been sharing stories with us. Here's a few highlights from their trip:

    Stupid Questions:

On the last night, the stewards entertained the passengers a bit, then someone (might've been the crew captain) shared the Top 10 Stupid Passenger Questions. Mum couldn't remember all of them, but apparently three of them were:

-"How do I know which photo is mine?" (bg: they would take your photo at random points on the cruise, which you could buy for a price. ALL of the photos were strung out along a corridor, so you just had to find your face)
-"Do these stairs go up?" (while standing about halfway along the decks)
-"Do the crew sleep on the ship?" ()

Apparently the other passengers found it hilarious

Why They Now Have This Disclaimer:

So on the last night on the ship, the passengers were told to pack their bags and leave them out in the hall so they could be collected, HOWEVER, they were also told to grab a change of clothes BEFORE they put their bags out. (you would think that was common sense) The reason why?

Apparently a couple of years ago, one passenger had packed his bags, then gone to have a shower (not taking a change of clothes with him). When he came out afterwards to get a change of clothes, they'd already taken the bags. The stewards gave him a pair of SCOOBY DOO PJ's to wear off the ship.

The theory tossed around by my parents was that the stewards had picked that outfit out deliberately to make an example of the guy.

    Random kid skits:

So the ship did cater for the kids, with little programs for them to keep them entertained. (it was a PnO cruise) At some points, the kids came out and performed for the other passengers.

One skit involved two kids. Their names were "dave" and "mabel". It'd be something like this (picture the kids standing a good distance apart):

"Dave, can I come a little bit closer?"
    "Sure"
"Mabel, can I come a little bit closer?"
    "Sure"

And they'd move a bit closer each time. Lather, rinse, repeat, until the two kids are almost at kissing distance. Then "dave" goes:

"Mabel, can I do something funny with my lips?"

The two kids then leapt back from each other and made a funny noise with their lips. All the passengers found it hilarious.

    They're not THAT primitive!

On one of the islands, the passengers were outside the Chief's Hut and they'd been told to not go in the left door, cause that was for the chief and his family. everyone else had to go in on the other side. One little boy was curious and had been edging towards the "Chiefs" door. The guide waved him away from the door and the little boy freaked out. The mother tried to get him to calm down, didn't work, so another passenger (an older lady) eventually calmed him down.

Later on, mum overheard the two women talking (all positive) and the whole story came out:

Apparently the older lady was a grandma and had taken her grandkids on a cruise previously (not the one they went on now). While at one of the islands, her grandkids had come across one of those "photo ops" where you could sit/stand inside a cauldron with some of the natives dressed up to look even MORE "primitive" with spears and whatnot (i.e. cannibals). One of the grandkids freaked out a bit because he thought it was real. And to top it off, because the natives had dark skin and the kids had been talking about "natives" in school, he COMPLETELY freaked. They reckon that the incident with the kid on THIS cruise was the same thing, partly because when they got back on the boat, both on the past tour and on this one, the kid in both cases wound up coming across a dark-skinned steward and panicked.

But my parents enjoyed themselves. I got a nice "kaftan/poncho" type thing (not quite long enough to wear as a dress, but good as a coverup for the beach or at the pool-I plan on wearing it to the latter), while my sister actually got a dress. I got a keyring and my sister got a ring. Turns out the kaftan/poncho type thing was worn by the native women on the island, who were MUCH bigger than me or my mum, but theirs went down to their feet. (not the one they bought for me though! )

it will also be here first flight. can't wait to get on the ship but not looking forward to flying
The mere fact that we have the flamethrower means that someone, somewhere once said "You know, I'd really like to set those customers over there on fire, but don't possess the means to do it"

Remember to take something she can suck on when the plane takes off and lands. If she is still on a bottle, that works great. (lollipops can also work). Otherwise the pressure can make her uncomfortable.

Apparently they have some great programs for the little ones. My parents did the Island Delights cruise, which included noumea, mystery island and isle of pines.
