She'd have a fit here. Custom for Diné (and several other tribes) for the men to have long hair, too.

Yes, but that's as good as "dem faarnurs" with their "heathen ways." So they'd get a grudging pass from her.
Which would be doubly hilarious, since "dem faarnurs" were here long before the white people were!

(Diné are also known as the Navajo, a Native American tribe, for the folks who aren't familiar with the term.)

Well aware of it! Try telling that to that cranky old bat, though.

I would have replied by telling the old bat to grow some hair.

It's common as dirt here where I live for men to have long hair, be they old, young, black, white or what have you. It's just part of the local culture. The only time you'll even be noticed for it is if you have very nice hair (which I do, and which led to an old lady petting me in church just to see if it was as soft as it looked) or if you venture out into the wee little towns out beyond the little metroplitan hub we've got going here. My boyfriend once got asked by an elderly man tottering down the sidewalk in a town an hour away if he was a man or a woman. I guess even with the beard, his dreads really just left too much room for error.

Some men look really good with long hair. I personally want hair to the top of my thigh when straight, so it will be at tailbone when curly. But no old lady would fault me for that, since I'm female. Well, maybe some would. Society says I'm too old for that. I don't care.

Hair styles and societally acceptable hair lengths go in cycles, and there have been many times throughout history where long hair was not only acceptable but de rigeur for men.

So judgmental people like this old battleaxe can go take a flying leap.

and it also depends on the area of the country you live in. where I live, men with ponytails/long hair are just an ordinary occurance as we have a fairly large Naitve American population (read revervation and large areas of land owned by them).

So far I have only had one "complaint" about my long hair (which I think I posted about about a year ago) by some snooty nurse who thought long hair was "unacceptable" just cause she was a nurse. This story can be found in I DO NOT LIKE HAIR thread.

That story reminded me of something that Demo Lady Vicky told me at the wholesale club.

She was doing demos in the club one day and stepped away from her station to point a customer to an item they were looking for. As she turns around to go back to her station, she sees some kid (I'm assuming somewhere between 8 and mid-20s) rush over to her station, which still had some demo food set out, lean over it, then tousle his hair about vigorously-- basically shaking all his loose hairs and skin cells all over the food!

Vicky yelled at him (something on the lines of "WHAT THE HELL ARE YOU DOING?!") and he immediately looked embarrassed, but probably only that he got caught. She yelled at him some more about how unsanitary it was, and had to throw out the food and clean down her station before she could prepare any more food.

I don't know what happened to the kid who did it, alas, but I secretly hope he got kicked out. (He probably didn't.)

We keep my son's hair about shoulder-length; it is very wavy and beautiful. People constantly mistake him for a girl, even when he is wearing his camo pants, Avengers t-shirt and Superman jacket, and is playing with his Transformers or Hot Wheels cars. I don't get it because I am seeing lots of little boys whose parents let their hair grow out.

My mother-in-law is the worst, I think she feels embarrassed because in her family every little boy has a buzz cut from birth to age 13 or so. When she asks about when we plan to give him a 'little boy haircut' I say, "When he asks me to cut it short, I will. Heck, if he asks for a green mohawk, he can have it."

I really want to say, "Look, if he's gay then he'll be gay whether he has long hair or a shaved head. If he's straight, he'll be straight whether he has long hair or a shaved head. Chill."

I experimented with growing my hair long in college. Well, less "experimented" and more "was too cheap to get a haircut" kinda thing, and as far as experiments go, well, this one, was eventually and mercifully sterilized to prevent it's recurrence. Too bad nobody ever told me to 'get a haircut', I had the perfect comeback ready:

"But I'm ten times richer than my big brother Bob! "

                          And he's got a haircut.......

When I was growing up the only haircut I ever saw on men was a buzz cut, (army brat) so when I went off base I was absolutely fascinated by the sheer length and variation of men's hair. My boyfriend has shoulder length fluffy hair that makes me very happy.

Seriously though, it isn't your body, you aren't dating or raising him so why should you have ANY say in how his not effecting you in any way body choice is?

I've seen men who look better with long hair than short hair and vice versa; ditto for women. Myself, if my hair gets long it starts getting in my way; then I have it cut as short as I can tolerate (since barbers don't charge by the pound ).
It all depends on the shape of the face and style of hair.

My ex had a friend who had long hair before he was diagnosed with Hodgekin's, so when he was diagnosed, he cut it off because he knew he was going to lose it anyway, and donated it to Locks of Love. Eventually, that cancer returned and he died over a year after my divorce was final, and the only reason I went to the memorial service is that this friend was a really nice guy.
