  • Epic End to a Police Career, Told by a Now Truck Driver!

I was told this by a driver at work today as we chatted while he hooked-up his load.

He used to be a police officer. He didn't say where. He loved his job, until one night. He got a call of a car crash. He got to the scene and found a car had crashed through the side of an office building at about 3am. The car was on the 4th floor. Yes, it was going so fast off an exit ramp that it flew into a building! He got up to the office where the car was wedged and found an older lady no worse for wear having a tantrum. She demanded he move 'that desk' so she could drive away and complained about the quality of the roads. He then realized she was sh*t faced. By this time he had back-up, including a female officer. He got her out of the car; she was unhurt due to driving a huge cadie, and had her blow a breathalizer. .186. He didn't know how she was still conscious! Then she turned into a raging tigress and began fighting him so he had to cuff her and put her in the back of his squad car, after being searched by the female officer. Where she puked. Luckily she had a lovely mink stole to wipe-up the worst of the mess. He brought her to the station and booked her. There he found out she was the local judge's wife!

Several hours later his chief called him in and asked if he knew who he had arrested. He said he did. The chief then said that he had to 'make this go away.' He told his chief that HE was not going to make it go away, because even if the lady was lucky not to have killed someone this time, she was probably going to do it next time. He said she could have her day in court like any other person. His chief sighed and said that he couldn't force his officer to do it and he went home for the night. Sometime during this time the judge's wife bailed herself out.

Several hours later he was woken by knocking on his front door. He opened it to find 4-state troopers stating he had a warrant out for his arrest for sexual assault. Yes, the judges wife filed charges against him, saying he had grabbed her breast during the pat-down, which she stated happened in front of the police cruiser. Only...He was able to prove that it was the FEMALE officer who did the pat down and it was caught on dash cam; so either she was so drunk she didn't realize he wasn't the only officer there or she just wanted to go after him.

While he was being booked on his trumped-up charges, the judge husband himself was escorted into the booking room and told him point-blank 'This can go away if you make THAT go away.' Again, he refused to let the judge's wife off.

In the end, the sexual assault charges against him were dropped and he continued pushing forward the charges against the judges wife. He made sure every news reporter in the area knew about the upcoming case so it couldn't be swept under the rug and they were all present at her trial. The judge let him alone after there was no way to keep the case quiet anymore and ended-up losing his position. The officer went to the local media with his personal story, but it never ended-up being published. He then resigned and got into truck driving.

I thought this was a terrible story of horrible bosses, abuse of power and how it seems drunk drivers never seem to want to pay for their actions.

What's that line about power corrupting ... he deserves a hero's award for refusing to knuckle under, but I'm sorry it cost him his police career. He sounds like the type of cop we need more of.

I don't see it necessarily "terrible". The judge did end up losing his position, which is a silver lining.

Still, sadly this shit happens more often than you think without repercussions. Kudos to the officer for doing the right thing and sticking to his integrity and ethics.

Wow I just love how they wanted to make the drunk driving/ran into a BUILDING incident go away and let her keep on doing this in the future cause she's SPESHUL.

        What The Fuck Ever.

Guess she ain't so speshul now

The owner of the building probably cared more about getting it fixed than whether criminal charges were filed. The drunk's insurance would have paid that bill, though I'll be she was uninsurable by private insurance after that. But judges can probably afford the ultra expensive state insurance plan.

A lot of people in positions of authority get this idea the rules don't apply to them. Eventually it bites them in the ass. However, in the meantime, a lot of people have to choose between their jobs and their ethics.

This former cop made the right call, and it's a shame he quit; we DO need more like him.

Sadly, I've seen examples of this kind of asshattery as well. The daughter of the DA in the county were I used to work in California ran over a rival in high school. The rival suffered brain damage, and a life long seizure disorder that probably shortened her life (she died at a very young age). The DA's daughter got off scot free.

To be perfectly accurate, she neither drove nor ran into the building. Her car was on the fourth floor. Which means she FLEW into the building. That certainly does take a certainly level of speshul, wouldn't you say?

Something somewhat similar happened down here. A local politico was arrested for driving drunk and running into someone. The girl he hit is permanently confined to a wheelchair and suffers permanent brain damage as a result of the injuries she received in that accident.

He tried to use his position in the community and his influence to make the charges go away, or to convince the courts that he should not serve jail time. His supporters tried to downplay the result of the incident, and many people ignored what happened to the victim.

End result: he was forced to resign his position. He was convicted of DUI with serious bodily injury. He was sentenced to 3.5 years in prison, followed by 1.5 years of probation upon his release. He fought like hell to avoid this, but although it took over 3 years from the time of the accident, he finally began serving his jail term in June 2011.

It could be argued that the sentence did not fit the crime. This is neither the place nor the time for such a debate. The point is that he tried to use his position to get away with the damage he did...and he failed. And I dare say the world, and especially Key West, is a better place for it. Not that that in any way helps his victim one damn bit.

Something to consider for people like the judge's wife, and those who tried to help her sweep the whole thing under the rug.

Right now in my town we have a problem with someone using his influence to help his son ESCAPE from his crime and court resulting of it.
I could bring it to fratching for details, but basically, this thing happens WAY too much. Good thing the former cop stuck it out, but resigning disappoints me.

The judge was out to get him, and would have gotten him eventually. I get why the cop had to do that. Long story short, I was forced to leave my last corrections job because I was an embarrassment to the administration--I insisted on doing my job right, and wouldn't compromise my ethics.

Management's response was to trump up a charge that I'd threatened another employee (that employee was stunned to hear this since it didn't happen) and try to fire me. The union got involved, and saved my job but I left anyway. I knew it was a matter of time before they got me on something else (and they did have something, though I technically didn't do anything wrong), and I just didn't want to risk my license there anymore. I'll post the whole lurid story in Morons in Management.

This cop was in the same boat. I really don't blame him for leaving at all.

Man that really sucks. Looking at the bright side though, all that work and a career to help get a corrupt judge and judge's wife off of the street. Who knows how many legit criminals were set free because of that judge, and now they'll be fairly judged (hopefully) by someone else.

I don't get the loss of a career thing. All that training, all of that doing what is right.. how come he couldn't just apply for a policeman in a neighboring town?

In the case presented by the OP, it was only a fluke that there was a building there to catch the drunk driver (4 stories up is a LONG distance for a vehicle to fall). Next time, the law firm of Karma, Murphy, and Associates will present an amicus brief that the precedent of the Montgomery Scott decision ("Ye canna change the laws of physics") applies, and the Ultimate Judge will agree. Note that the decision of a 40 foot fall is not subject to appeal.
