Though I'm not quite sure how I was being antagonistic or offensive, I'd like to point out that I'm not particularly aware of American adoption laws, being British. My uncle and his wife have adopted over here, and yes, it isn't cheap and it is difficult, but a lot of those checks are for a reason.

It's not necessarily offensive, but it's a very controversial subject (as evidenced by discussions on a forum I moderate on), and it's likely more appropriate subject matter for fratching.com
I wanna Chihuahua!!!
Mike, I agree that it's really disturbing to STILL encounter people who will yell and scream racist epithets in public. My grandma (ugh) calls muslims and sheiks (sp?) towel-heads, and I once dated a guy whose grandmother called ALL people darker than their own Welsh family "darkies"... I find it especially sad when it's YOUNGER people spouting that nonsense

Okay, I'm gonna say a couple of things and then, like you said, drop it.Quoth draftermatt View PostOr it could be the money and difficulty that American adoption agencies make you go through. Including giving the kid back to the birth parents despite them giving it up or not being fit.
But I guess that does'nt matter, facts and all. Now please, before Madmike has to close his own thread drop it.
Adoption is expensive, but it's also a personal thing. Adopting from a foreign country is, more often than not, MORE expensive than adopting in the country. Also, a lot of stars probably adopt from foreign countries because they know they can afford to and they are trying to give a good life to a child that otherwise wouldn't have one.
That being said, I dare you or anyone to walk down the street in America and tell me what children are American children that have been adopted. You couldn't do it. Part of the reason overseas adoptions get recognition is because they are obvious and easy to see. If my children didn't have a same sex couple as parents, no one would ever guess they were adopted. Most people still think that they are the biological children of one of the fathers.
I am not trying to spark debate or anything, I am just saying that I think the adoption of needy American children is much MUCH more prevelant than you might think."The things that I remember best - those are the things I wasn't supposed to do…."

Most people are too ignorant to be bothered learning the differences. A lot of people around here are surprised that I can usually tell the difference between Chinese, Japanese, Korean & Vietnamese accents and facial structures. The only words you said that I understood were "His", "Phone" and "Ya'll". The other 2 paragraphs worth was about as intelligible as a drunken Teletubby barkin' come on's at a Hooter's waitress.

She's like "you can't tell, they all look the same"... riiiight mom. But she can tell a Somali from a South African at ten paces
(when I was in high school we got a massive influx of Somali refugees in our city - they have a rather distinct facial construction).

My grandmother does that (or did until recently, methinks the stay in the nursing home mellowed her as she didn't really have a choice to not interact with the non-white staff). My late grandfather was also a bit racist/prejudiced, but learned to squelch it.Quoth tollbaby View PostMy grandma (ugh) calls muslims and sheiks (sp?) towel-heads, and I once dated a guy whose grandmother called ALL people darker than their own Welsh family "darkies"... My stepfather once did customer-satisfaction survey calling for car dealers, and every once in awhile would adopt the accent of a person he was calling. Never did figure out why he did that; it was simultaneously horrifying and hysterically funny.
The twit from college would spout racist stuff without even knowing it sometimes. Once she started babbling mock-Japanese at the sushi/teppan restaurant; I wanted to die and my dad looked like he wanted to kill her. I finally ended it with something directed at her that, had she actually understood Japanese and been bigger than me, might have put me in danger of being seriously hurt (admittedly my pronunciation was a bit bad at the time, but it shut her up...no, I don't remember what it was).Last edited by Dreamstalker; 04-04-2007, 08:35 PM."I am quite confident that I do exist."

It was probably a sub-conscious thing. My coworkers once told me (when I used to sell magazine subscriptions over the phone to several southern states) that when I was talking to someone from Alabama or Georgia, I'd develop the same twang as the caller. I'd never even noticed!!!!! *blush* (Obviously, living in Canada, I don't *really* talk that way LOL)Quoth Dreamstalker View PostMy stepfather once did customer-satisfaction survey calling for car dealers, and every once in awhile would adopt the accent of a person he was calling. I do it. All the damn time. I always end up talking louder when I can't understand someone too. I know that doesn't help them understand me, but I do it anyway.
