  • too good for the deposit slip

So Monday I went to a branch of the bank I use. It's a Local Bank that I often visit the main location for because my work uses that bank & I'm the one who runs the deposits. I also have a personal account with them.

Now when I do a deposit at the counter I always count my cash & checks & fill out the nifty little depost/withdrawal. If I'm doing it for work, I do my counting in the office there and bring the pre-counted money & slip (all filled out--I've got a small stash at work--they sure don't mind me snagging a stack & taking 'em with me at the bank). And at the main branch, this seems to be the norm. I may sometimes wait in line a bit if they're busy or short staffed, but the customers all seem to have behaved and filled out their own slips.

But the branch? Yikes. So I go in with my check; the atm is in use and anyway I want some cash back so I go inside and fill out my slip before getting in line. While I'm filling out my slip, some dude comes in, snags a slip and gets in line. Does not grab a pen or use the counter that is conveniently next to him to fill it out, either. I'm in line now and realize that NO ONE HAS THEIR SLIPS FILLED OUT. And three of the four offenders have business accounts--you can tell because they've got those lovely zippered bank bags (identical to our at work!). Do they even know how much money they're bringing up before the teller counts it? I mean, I know they teller has to count it, but still, don't you want to know what you've got beforehand?

I was literally biting my tongue to keep my mouth from dropping open and to keep from loudly asking why no one filled out their damn slips! I swear, even with three windows open and only four people ahead of me I waited three times longer there than I even have at the main branch. Lazy people suck.

to be honest i never fill my slip out either. i usually just hand them the check, my ID card, and the account-number card and ask for them to "please deposit this into checking". cos really there's nothing on the slips that they need - they have my account number on the card. they have my ID card to see that it's me. and they can read the check to see the amount. (last time in the drive through i had to do it, took a long time really... the guy was new though)

although in your case i can understand why it's frustrating. multiple numbers of bills (something harder to count than say a couple of 20s or 100s), possibly loose change. if the bank counts wrong... the customer has no proof of it, right?

Your way makes sense--you're IDing yourself & giving them the relevant info (acct#, what you're doing with the funds).

If I've listed the name on the account & the account number on the slip, my bank doesn't ask for ID or account #, so I guess I use the slip basically the same way you use your ID & card. I doubt your way has any hold ups

nope. if anything i think it makes things easy on them cos they have all the info there.

but i also don't deposit anything strange - either a check, or easily counted bills. so ... pretty much i'm not doing what the people you saw were doing, in bringing up bags to deposit etc.

They did away with those slips about 15 years ago in my area. I used to have to deposit cash for the store and I always knew exactly how much I was giving. The same when needing rolls; always wrote it on a paper. It used to annoy me seeing the other people juggling their stuff to get what the teller needed yet I was all prepared; wasted so much time

In my area they only use those slips for the shared branching credit union business.

They're probably the same kind of people I get behind in the checkout line at the supermarket. I swear I always get behind the person paying with a check but don't fill anything out until the cashier gives the total. While your items are being scanned you should be writing the date, name of store and even sign the damn thing so all you have to do is fill out the amount.

The tellers at my back absolutely love me when I deposit my tip and gas money once a month. I have all of my bills bank faced in one nice neat stack, my deposit slip is all filled out with the require information (Name, account numberand total dolloar amont being deposited) and I even have each denominations seperated out. all they have to do is run the stack through the bill counting machine and punch in the total into their workstation.
I'm lost without a paddle and headed up SH*T creek.

Lately (last few years or so) I've noticed that bills are no longer facing the same way anymore. They're either upside down or backwards. Many years ago cashiers in our store were adamant about having everything facing same way and not upside down. I see this everywhere I go now.

I don't think I've ever filled out a deposit slip when making a deposit with a teller. *shrugs* Call it my human interaction for the day when I'm not using something computerized.

Keeping in mind though, my banks rarely ever have a line and if they do, it's one or two people. The joys of living in a tiny town.
