Dear pedestrian with little kidlets

Please...don't ever....EVER run out into the street to cross with your kidlets in tow that it puts all three of you in danger. I don't care if you were at a crosswalk, the turning light was green and you coulda been hit. Pedestrians my have the right of way but that was stupid.


Also a question for Virginia drivers. Is there a law that you have to stop for crossing ducks? MiL stopped for some on the way home but she held up a line of cars in the process. She said there's a Texas law where you will get fined if you run over ducks crossing the street and she is from texas. I just wanna know in case that it happens again.

I don't know if you HAVE to stop for ducks - except perhaps on private property where it's requested etc - but... ducks won't move out of the way either. even if you honk at them.

I am not from Virginia, but in Driver's Ed I was taught that you do not risk an accident trying to stop for/avoid animals in the road. That Nationwide commercial about remebering Driver's Ed and breaking for squirrels... That is not what I was taught.

My Google search showed nothing in the Texas rule of the road about yielding to ducks. I did find a mention of a park in Fort Worth, TX that has a large duck population. Parks rules say you yield to the ducks.

I watched, amused as all get-out, as a bunch of ducks held up 5 or 6 cars who were trying to get into the parking lot at my store last fall. Those ducks would not get out of the way, even if honked at. It was hilarious, but I felt sorry for the drivers. Silly ducks.

Hubby's from Oregon and said there are duck-crossing laws there, but a quick Google search didn't turn up any. I know I've seen duck crossing signs down there, though.

(In my neck of the woods we have deer crossing signs. No specific laws regarding them, but it's best for your own vehicle to not hit them.)

My driver's ed instructor allegedly docked points on a student's drive because she stopped for a cat. I wasn't there to witness it though.

Here on base, near the hospital we're required to stop for gooses and swans, they will fine you if you run one over, specially since the hospital paid for the swans.

Yeah, WAAAAaaay too many people seem to have 'right of way' and 'clad in Iron Manesque Armor' confused. Legal justification and physics don't always agree on outcome.

From Virginia's DMV manual:

"If a collision with a deer or other animal is unavoidable,
do not swerve. Brake firmly, stay in your lane, and come
to a controlled stop. "

Implies "No" to me.

Do they just assume that anyone honking is a goose? I've encountered geese nesting near loading docks and truck parking areas, and they'd pay no attention to a semi a foot away from them (one was nesting on a concrete-filled corrugated pipe bollard surrounding a telephone pole). Get out of the truck to check your spacing, however, and all hell breaks loose.

One I've heard about (but not seen) is a moose standing in the road. DO NOT blow a low-pitched air horn to try to get it to move - it'll interpret that as a challenge, and tear up your truck.

I don't know... could be. I just figured they were stubborn.

but the 2 places i encountered them at were places where most roads were safe to cross anyway. one was on base - 25mph limit there - and at the local botanical gardens - where the limit was ... maybe 25? i think it was lower in some areas though.

That's probably why trains in Hokkaido are usually fitted with a type of air-powered whistle rather than a horn.
