  • Check Your Blind Spot!

This happened this afternoon, on my way to work.

I take "Highway 1" to get to work. It's the fastest, most convenient way to get there. Any other route would be longer, and be stop-and-go like mad, due to both heavier traffic flow (for most of them, they're one- or two-lane per direction) and numerous traffic lights.

There's an on-ramp for "Route 6" just before my exit that I pass every day. Not usually too much traffic from there, but if there is, they always slow down before merging in, because that's how things work. The people coming off Route 6 have to yield to the traffic already on Highway 1.

Today, Car A came off Route 6 and I was pulling even with them, still at highway speed, when they started to merge over. Right at me.

I had to swerve to one side to avoid colliding-- and damn near hit Car B in the next lane that would have been in my blind spot a moment later.

Fortunately, everyone involved in this realized their respective dangers and reacted accordingly. Both Car A and Car B slowed down to avoid the collision, I got out of the way, and Car A slowed quite a ways back before merging into my lane behind me.

All because Car A didn't check to see that they were clear before trying to merge.

I had something similar happen to me a month ago or so -- I wanted to get to the offramp from the right lane; the onramp/merge-lane was shortly before it, and quite busy. As it happened, one guy who was merging into the highway decided that there was no need to check for the presence of another car before merging...As for the result? -- Let's just say, I now know for certain that my car's brakes are in working order O_O
