Had this brilliant gem yesterday - I might be a bit premature in posting as I doubt we've seen the end of this...
We've paving a two-lane N/S road. A large bicycle trail runs E/W and crosses the road here - there is a large island splitting the road here with a crosswalk for joggers and bikers. The paver is in the SBL and has just laid a mat of fresh asphalt between the trail and the island. A biker is coming WB and sees all the activity. Does he stop and wait? Of course not! Runs the stop sign and swings north just around the north tip of the island, then rams his way across the road.
Well, *tried* to ram his way across. Hitting the uncompacted asphalt was probably like hitting the beach - it stopped him cold <no pun intended> and he and his bike took a tumble onto the asphalt. Asphalt is delivered hot, around 300 F. BTW, it was in the upper 90's here with the heat index approaching 100 F (35 C). Fool was wearing shorts and a T-shirt, ended up with first and second degree burns not to mention the damage to the bike.
The paperwork on all this is already at monumental proportions. And I'm just waiting for the fool to suddenly get the idea he can sue somebody and make a buck off of this. The roller operator tried to warn him as did the flagger by the island and our rep, but he ignored them all as well as blowing through a stop sign. He won't win, but he can cause a lot of trouble for us and the paving company.
Further updates as I learn them...
