I was driving home from my little vacation (as mentioned in the main Sightings section). I was only half an hour or less away from home, on a highway. As any IL or even WI person can tell you, it is the second half of one of the two seasons we have, construction. Yippee!

So, I'm on the highway, where the construction is, doing 45, as is dictated on a sign that says "45 MPH! MIN. $375 FINE FOR SPEEDING!"

I dunno about the rest of you, but for me, that is almost two whole paychecks. When I have other bills to pay, that would be a no no.

Car after car rode on my tail and I was sitting there, wishing that I was able to get that bumper sticker that stated "If you're going to ride my ass, at least pull my hair!"

So what do these people do? They FLY past me, in the construction zone! As they pass me, they gave me dirty looks.

Look. The only time I have been pulled over was when someone else was driving. I personally have never been pulled over, given a ticket, or anything. *knock on wood* I have had my license for 2 years, that crap is not starting now.

Although, one speeder got his just desserts. He was flying down the road and he got pulled over by highway patrol.

Every day to and from work I'm on a 55MPH road. I do about 60. I get people speeding past, riding my tail, etc. When I do have to pass, It takes me going about 80 to do it! How so many people get away with doing 75+ on that road amazes me, because I hardly see anyone pulled-over.

When I travel on the highway in non-construction zones I will usually go up to a little under 10 over. Most traffic is easily at 10 over and I figure the cops are much more interested in the guy going 80 in the left lane passing everyone and not someone going say 7-8 over.

I went through one zone on an exit from the highway, where the speed limit signs were marked 45. The exit itself is on a banked curve and also marked 45. I was doing 40 since I was driving my top heavy work van, plus making sure I kept to the side away from the guys working. Their lookout still gave me the 'slow down' hand signal and dirty look.

Well, that depends on where you are, and how dickish the local HP is feeling.

My mother once got pulled over and cited for 5 miles over the limit. The worst part is that she wasn't even speeding at the time.

Not really... I had a friend once, posted speed limit was 60mph, he was doing 75. However there was a PACK of people (at least 5) in front of him easily doing 90+


He's the one who got pulled over, when he asked the officer why he got pulled over when others were going a lot more over the limit, the officer told him.

"You were the easiest one to catch."

A buddy of mine that used to be a cop said that the ONLY reason a veteran, experience cop writes for five over is to make a point. A rookie does it to be a dick.

I think we have 10% plus 2mph leeway in the UK as a speedometer has only to be within 10%

I've been ticketed three times:

50mph in a 30mph zone
99mph in a 60mph zone (4:30AM Street Racing. I know it was my fault, a fact that the $500 ticket more than drove home)

...aaaaaand...

16mph in a 15mph zone

I've seen people get nailed on the highway. Seeing them get busted is awesome, especially when they see the cop, yet go roaring past him anyway. I-79 is one road where you can't say that you 'didn't see the cop.' I mean, lots of straightaways, plenty of open space, etc. You can literally see a state trooper's cruiser from miles away.

One time, I was in my grandmother's car (V6-powered Olds Cutlass Ciera). I'm doing about 72 or so in a 65mph zone. But, that wasn't fast enough for someone--a dark-colored sedan went roaring by me. Didn't last long--about a half-mile away, there's a state trooper sitting on the right side of the highway. Dark sedan went by him, trooper puts his lights on, and nailed him. Time "saved?" About 2 seconds before I passed them both. Was it really worth getting a $250 ticket? Probably not

Oh, you bet she tried to argue it. To set the scene a little, my mother is a long-haired hippie woman and I think all of the five of us in the car looked a bit hippie-ish (including one of my male cousins who is actually a yuppie). He was just being a dick because he didn't like our looks.

Story time!

I have two all-time favorite cop stories.

The first is one that I got to witness. I was driving up to San Jose on a stretch of the I5 that's pretty wide open. The speed limit was still 65 at the time, and I was doing between 70 and 75 (as was most of the rest of the traffic).

Then this blue-ish CRX goes flying by doing probably over 90, weaving in and out to get past everybody, and I make a comment that he's "trying to get himself pulled over." Another couple of miles we spot this CHP officer come from the other side of the freeway, drive across the wide dirt median, and speed off ahead of us, at which point I just grinned, because I knew why he'd pulled around.

Yup, not 10 miles down the road, and we pass the CHP and the blue-ish car pulled over.

This second one, I also witnessed, but as I was about 20 months old, I have no memories of it.

My mother was driving on the freeway with me and my brother in the back of the car, when some late-teen/early-20s asshats in a van decided that she wasn't allowed to pass them. So every time she changes lanes, they cut her off. Eventually, she decides she's in no mood for their antics and pulls off the freeway. The asshats cut over to get to the offramp (ending up behind her), and then proceed to come around, with a passenger mooning her as they blow through the red light she had stopped for.

As she's watching them speed off, there's a knock at her driver's side window. She rolls it down for the motorcycle CHP officer who tells her, "Who says there's never a cop around when you need one," before hitting his lights and chasing down the van of asshats. Oh to have been a fly on the wall for that bit of pwnage.

Ahhhh that may have played a major role right there. Cops have told me that the number one thing you don't do is argue with the officer during the traffic stop. That is what court is for. He may have planned to give her a warning but decided to give her an "attitude ticket". Be polite, don't admit anything. Chances are he'll give you a warning. I was pulled over for five over once when I was 19 and I only got a warning. If he does give you the ticket don't try to "stand out" in any way. Just take it and don't say anything and take it to court.

One other thing -- which may vary by state -- which can help is this: Here in LA (the state, not the city), if you get a ticket from a cop, you can either go in and "admit guilt" (pay it), try to get it reduced by copping to a lesser traffic offense (and paying it), or contest it in court -- if you show up for the court date but the cop does not (he may be on patrol or whatever at that exact moment), it gets dismissed automatically due to a lack of witnesses. However, if he does show up (which seems more likely to me), you gotta pay, no chance of reduction.
