  • Lay off the brake, buddy

So I'm on a two lane (one going in each direction) road on the way home from work and there's a long line of cars (about a dozen). The speed limit's 65 and they're all going between 65-70. I'm about the 8th car back in the line up. Up ahead, there was an SUV, being tailgated by a small red car, which was being tailgated by a black car.

My first thought was, "Stop tailgating. He can't go any faster since there's a whole line in front of him." Then I notice that the black car, the one right in front of me, keeps touching his brakes. I really mean that he's riding them. I'm wanting to scream. My thoughts turned to, "If you have to touch your brakes every second or two, literally, to keep from hitting the car in front of you, SLOW DOWN."

Then, we get to a point where it's legal to pass. The red car passed the SUV. I'm thinking, "Great! This black brake-riding sucker is going to pass him too. Afterall, he has plenty of time to do it." Oh no, he doesn't make that choice. He'd rather continue tailgating the SUV and riding his brakes the rest of the way.

I know it's nothing, but it feels nice to get it off my chest.

Brake riders are my biggest pet peeve on the road.

They make me laugh, because idiots like them are the reason mechanics will always be in business.

There are a lot of people who are under the mistaken impression that the only way to drive a vehicle is to be pushing down on a pedal at all times.

In actuality, it's far easier to plan ahead for stop signs, red lights, and obvious congestion so that you use your brakes as little as possible, either by coasting or by braking early.

And if you have to stop, brake hard early on (rather than at the end of your stop) so that if there is an issue you have time to respond before you plow into someone. This saved me when my brake line blew out a while back.

And, of course, never use your gas pedal more than necessary. It conserves fuel and wear on your engine by not working it any harder than necessary.

        Erm...driving lesson dismissed?
