  • Way to almost kill people!

I was driving down a 2-lane (1-both ways) road, 45mph, nice weather, light traffic. Coming towards me is a pick-up truck, with an suv towing a trailer behind it. The pick-up truck just SUDDENLY made a sharp right into a driveway and sat there with his ass-end sticking-out; no signal or anything. The suv behind him had to swerve into my lane so sharply to get around the pick-up that he was on 2-wheels, and the trailer he was towing made him swerve all over the place until he got control again. I slowed WAY down to give the suv time to recover and get back in his own lane. Did he look pissed! Guy in the pick-up truck was oblivious, still sitting half-in the driveway looking down at something when I passed.

The guy in the SUV was at fault for not following at a safe enough distance that he could stop when the truck turned and stopped in front of him. And swerving into the path of oncoming traffic was the absolutely WRONG thing to do when he realized his mistake.

Glad you had good reactions and you're OK. That must have been scary.

I'd have to agree with that. Had that happen to me once when someone was turning into a restaurant parking lot and the car couldn't make it in all way because the lot was already backed up with other cars. I was away from him far enought to have enough time to slow down and get around him. But I was still pissed and honked at him because he could have seen that there was obviously no room for his oversized SUV to get into the lot at the time.

I understand and I do the same, but always be prepared to stop just in case. If you hit someone in that cirucmstance you would be found at fault.

I have to agree that the SUV with the trailer had to be following way too close if he had to swerve to avoid the truck.

Trailers can really add a lot of required stopping distance, and make handling a bear, so he should have been leaving a large gap to begin with.
