  • "Put On Your Seatbelt!"

I couldn't believe my eyes. I was sitting at a stop light and saw an SUV in the left turn lane with a 5 year old girl sticking her whole torso out of the window.

It was a long light so I gave the driver the benefit of the doubt. Surely he'd reign her in and have her sit down and put on her seat belt, right?

Nope. Their lane started moving and she was still hanging out the window.

I yelled "You! Put on your seatbelt!" as they pulled away. She did pull her body out of the window but I don't know if she heeded me.

I'm really kicking myself for not getting the license number and reporting that moron to the police. I know they can't issue a ticket without observing the incident but just calling him and letting him know that other people are watching can't hurt.

What kind of spineless moron lets his kids dictate whether they become potential projectiles?

    Far, far too many.

I've seen several cars with toddlers jumping up and down in the back seat and using the front seats like they were monkey bars! While the car was moving.

If that's sad I was once behind a beat-up SUV with a toddler standing in the back window giving everybody the finger and laughing.

A few years ago there was an accident where a woman lost control of her car and her toddler flew out the back window and was killed because the kid wasn't buckled in. The woman was arrested for it.

I saw that same thing the other day but with a young boy! Couldn't believe it. Wow.

Maybe the child can fly and hit the person in a place so that they don't have more children...

For the life of me, I don't understand why people don't belt their kids or themselves in. But hey, if they get in an accident they can just sue the car companies.

My husband goes without a seatbelt all the time, and it really gets to me. I don't say anything because he has his little defense of either A) My dad almost died in a crash because he was buckled up or B) They're uncomfortable. I know this is crap. I know I should nag him untill he does, but on a 2 hour road trip I'd rather not have him pissed off the whole way. I just hope it doesn't come down to *god forbid* getting in an accident and I'm left alone because he's gone through the windshield and died.

More on topic: I love the parents who let their kids roam free in the car- until they see a cop, and suddenly they're all over the road trying to wrangle suzie and jimmy into their seats. Unless the car was stopped, I was NEVER allowed out of my seat as a kid.

Oh, it's even better with the seatbelt thing... he can end up killing you because he didn't have his on. A human head is about the same weight as a kid's bowling ball. Just think of what sort of damage even a very light bowling ball would do in a major accident.

If you want illustrations of that little factoid, just search YouTube with the terms "Seatbelt" and "PSA" and you'll get a few very disturbing PSAs about what can happen inside a car during an accident when one person isn't wearing a belt.

And my grandfather survived a crash once because he was thrown through the windshield (the pole he hit fell on and crushed the car). But he knew it was the exception and wore his belt for most of his adult life.

My car doesn't move unless everybody has their belt on. If they don't like it, they can either go without me or find another ride.

And I don't ride in a vehicle without buckling up myself. I am not being turned into a projectile, thank very much!

My rule is "buckle up or walk". I won't even start my car until everyone's strapped in. Got my grandmother mad at me once because of it. I picked her up at her house. We get in the car, I put on my seat belt and wait for her to do hers up. And I sat. She finally asked why and I told her. She was not happy that I made to fasten it. I told her that I didn't want to take a chance on getting a ticket. To which she answered that she'd pay the ticket. Fine and dandy except for the fact of the points that would go on my license!

Seeing this video on You Tube about the drivers there I can see why you stress seatbelt use.

I'm not too worried about passengers not buckling up because just a few months ago, they passed a new law that now cops can pull you over just for not wearing your seat belt.

As in, if a cop sees anyone not wearing their seat belt....you can get pulled over.

And if the people in question are over a certain age, they get the fine. Not the driver.

And now, seat belt fines are jacking up. So buckle up or pay up, pals.

AFAIK, here in SC the driver gets hit with the penalty even if they're not the one who isn't buckled up.

Damn straight my car doesn't move an inch without everyone wearing their seat belt.

If they don't like that... well, I hear walking is good exercise.

In Denmark the driver is responsible for children under 15 years, everybody else pay their own fine. I still insist that all passengers use the seatbelts, I don't really want to have to wash a friends blood off my windshield.

                            People are stupid.

Too many people treat their car like it's their living room, and let the kids roam around, because....seats and seat belts are too much of a hassle to buckle.
