I have to admit, one thing I learned from my time as a pizza dude was how to identify a speed trap. There's one in my area which is not even CLOSE to an interstate or school, yet they enforce the 35mph limit rabidly. They WILL ticket you for 37 if it's a slow day.

In my area their they have the flashing speed sighs of 25 MPH when children are present, i/e beginning and end of the day. The cops are lurking at one of the elementry school at one of the times most days, but rarely at the high school, well for speeding anyway.
Did have one idiot pass myself and three other cars and a school bus with red lights flashing and kids crossing. Cop was present and nailed him. Police log said 5 tickets were issued.

There is a small school zone on the four lane highway nearby. It's 20 MPH through there. The police don't even have to enforce it. Everyone, without fail, always slows down and does 20 to 25 MPH. It's the only school zone in my area that people *actually* slow down so much for. The reason?
The blinking signs aren't on the side of the road, like the rest of the county's are. These are suspended, in the air over the four lane highway, at the same height as traffic lights. So, *everyone* sees it and no one can say that they didn't. You can't miss it.Comment

Around here, about 3 or 4 years ago, we had a rash of students getting hit by cars around schools,(and a couple of them killed). I think the worse was some 18 year killed a 10 year old while she was either dialing or chatting on a cell phone. I think she ended up losing her license for life, and got 5 years in prison for it. As a result all the local Police Departments started to seriously enforce the School Zone laws. Before hand, people treated the school zone as a "suggestion" now you slow to 20MPH, go 21 and if there is a cop around (which there almost always is) your ass is in a sling.Just sliding down the razor blade of life.

It's really sad that you have to end up scraping dead kids off the road before some towns will actually do something about it.Comment
