  • Stop!

Mom, Grandma, and I were out shopping at one of Grandma's favorite quilting stores yesterday, and had finished, and loaded into the car, Mom starts to back out, more than half of her car hanging out into the parking lot, and Mom and I notice an older gent in a land tank driving up from the driver's side of the car.
I notice he's not looking around, and not slowing down at all! Mom stops to let the asshole pass behind her. Hmm...

Something very similiar happened to me in the Wal-Mart parking lot earlier this year.

Driving rules around here state anyone leaving a parking spot must yield to traffic in motion. Is it different around there? I'd hate for one of my friends to be visiting and not be familiar with some of the more esoteric driving rules of the area.

        Same thing, here.

If you could see someone coming, then it is your duty to stop and let them pass before continuing to pull out of your spot.

Through traffic has right of way, always. Even when they're doing something stupid and even possibly illegal.

Here, if the person is more than 50% our of their spot, then oncoming traffic has to yield. Otherwise, the car backing up has to yield. If they were halfway out of the spot, the guy should have let them finish backing.

Wow, that's a bad system. How am I supposed to be able to tell if a car's 50% in or out? Do I need to have a categorical knowledge of all makes and models of cars, so I know how much of the vehicle is obstructed from my view?

Anyhow, I've always understood the rule to be yield to through traffic when pulling out of a parking space. That 50% rule sounds magically dumbasslicious. If a car is that far out of the space, the oncoming traffic will probably have to stop anyway, since the other car will be well out in the traffic lane.
