I've been wondering if newer cars weren't inspired by the TARDIS. My boss couldn't believe that I (6'2" 400+ lbs) drive (and fit comfortably in) a Ford Focus. While I haven't driven a smart car yet, I've had the opportunity to sit in one and found it quite comfortable.

The latest entry (AFAIK) in the small car market is the Volkswagen 1-Liter car.

I'm not sure what it is about larger people driving tiny vehicles, and smaller people driving enormous trucks and SUVs.

My little brother has an old Fiero. He is about 6'2 and 230, and it's so funny to see a lumberjack with curly hair driving a little red penis extender.

The one day my dad wanted to do an emergency beer run but mom had their car, and I refused to let him use my Neon because he'd screw up where the seat goes and the mirrors and he farts in the car (I am dead serious, and it will linger forEVER, when I inherited his old Tempo I had to get the car shampooed), and he took brother's Fiero (and dad is about 6'4 pushing 300 lbs), when he got out it was like the Fiero gave birth to my dad.

Nothing about the SmartCar is smart. I drove a mid-size SUV and nose to nose the I am behind the car in the driver seat. I don't care what you do to reinforce it, the smart will loose in a crash.

I know that a Billy bookcase from IKEA...will fit in a Toyota Corolla with room to spare. Hell, I managed to get a pair in mine. Just drop the rear seat, slide the front one all the way forward, and in they go!

But, if I had the choice of getting an SUV or station wagon...the wagon would win every time...especially if it's something interesting, like an old VW 411/412, Volvo 245-series, etc. Granted, I'm a bit biased--my mother has a Saturn Vue, and it can't handle quite a few things. You can't get a full sheet of plywood in it, or even a door without it being annoyingly cramped or having to tie the tailgate shut.

Then there's the MG. When my father was looking at buying cars in England years ago for a magazine article, he tried to tell my mother...that an MGB GT was really a station wagon Sure you can carry larger quantities of luggage, but the rear seat is really only for children or legless dwarfs! At 5'9" I can sit back there, but it sucks on long trips
