  • The one where Irv almost ends up under a semi

The setting: A three-lane freeway. The left lane is ending, meaning there will be two lanes.

I'm tooling along in the leftmost lane in front of a semi with a trailer. When I see the sign saying my lane is about to end, I signal and move over. There's another car behind me in that lane, but far enough back so I can move over. Probably enough space for the semi too, or at least the car behind me can let off the gas and let the semi in.

The retard driving the semi doesn't merge like I do. What does he do instead? Stay in the left lane and gun it to try and get ahead of me, fail, and end up having to merge in about two feet in front of me. His trailer came thisclose to smacking the front of my car.

By this time there was somebody else coming up in the rightmost lane, so I couldn't really move over. And the car behind me had gotten close enough that had I slammed on the brakes, I probably would've been ass-ended. Then I would've gotten to die in a fire.

It's pretty damn scary somebody trusted this guy with a ginormous vehicle like an 18-wheeler.

I hate to judge truckers, my dad working for a truck company and me meeting some of these guys and all, knowing they have a pretty shitty job, but I have to agree with the last part of your post.

There are some real road ragers driving those behemoths of trucks.

There are a lot of motorists who go out of their way to mess with truckers, and I can understand some of it, but I've had my own experiences with some nasty truckers and their rage and dominant behavior that have left me with pretty-near shit filled panties.

All I can say, Irv, is this guy is lucky it was you he nearly killed, and not my father. Dad would've followed the guy until he stopped, gotten out, gone over, opened his driver's side door, and torn him a new asshole. How do I know this? I was in the vehicle when it happened. Dad was taking me home from college for a weekend, and a semi passed us illegally on the right, and nearly hit us. He would've killed me if he would've hit us. Dad was irate, to say the least. He followed the guy into the next town, put the car in park at the four-way stop, got out, went to the guy's door, and, as I stated above, gave the guy a piece of his mind. Then, he took down the company and truck number and reported the guy to the company's safety administrator. Sorry to go off on a tangent, but I just wanted to say, coming from a trucker's daughter, that dude was lucky--and so were you! Wow!

I've heard that kind of stupid mentality comes from the fact that they feel that they are OWED courtesy, because they keep America moving.

And people wonder why I take the bus, a cab, or shoe leather express.

That's why so many semis have a ## on the back.... The Beau has called in more than one for driving like an idiot.

Whenever I see a semi doing something stupid, they invariably never have the How's My Driving stickers on them.

                Grr...

I usually have no problems with truckers, though one instance stands out in my mind. I was travelling cross-country and my side of the highway had four lanes. I was in a middle lane and was going the speed limit. The semi behind me started riding my tail, close enough that I couldn't even see the top of his grill. He was trying to intimidate me into speeding up, which I didn't want to do. This was before I moved up here, so I wasn't used to that amount of traffic and was freaked out and unable to move over -other traffic was in the lane to my right. So I took my foot off the gas and slowly started to reduce speed - anything to get this guy off my bumper. The semi suddenly veered to the left, sped up, and then swooped back over to my lane. He barely cleared my car while his trailer swayed furiously. When he regained control, he slammed on the brakes. I was freaked out. I was cursing. Then the asshole sped up and left me in the dust. Damn that scared the hell out of me.
