  • Sorry to Make You Move...

...when you were parked in the fire lane and blocking me in!

I'm doing my professional semester of teaching right now, and sometimes that means I stay until almost 5 pm (2 hours after my class has left). Today I walked out with my supervising practitioner (henceforth known as SP) and we went to our cars. Teachers have a small lot directly in front of the building to use, as well as extra parking around the side. We were both parked in front.

He's able to get his red truck out no problem, and I start to back Bleu (formerly Preggers, but I'm sure she's past term by now...) out when I realize I'm inches from a BMW SUV thing parked in the fire lane, right in front of my space. I try to wiggle around it, but no use. I can't go anywhere until they move. And, oh look, no one's in the car.

I end up getting out and going to the call box as if I was asking to be let back in, and let them know about the car blocking the way out and they do an all call to get someone to come out and move it.

I wait. Ten minutes later a mother and her two children come out and head to a car that wasn't the BMW. They then realize that they can't really get out either. She at least puts the two tots in the car and turns it on to keep them warm.

Finally, a woman storms out of the side of the gym, glaring at both me and the mom, and marches over to the BMW to move, still glaring daggers. She backs it up, so I could get out, but now she's fenced in the Mom, so she moves forward again and blocks me a second time. She finally has enough of this and pulls into an open space further down that wasn't in the fire lane. Mom and I get out, and she flips us the bird.

Y'know lady, this wouldn't have been an issue if you actually, y'know, were in a space. Just saying. Kinda thankful there wasn't an emergency or something, although I would have loved to see karma in action there.

Absolutely. She was breaking the law by parking there. (God forbid a fire break out while she was blocking the fire lane.) A parking ticket and towing fee is the least she deserves.

Love how she had the audacity to glare at you for inconveniencing her.
I don't have an attitude problem. You have a perception problem.

There's no entitlement like parking entitlement.

I used to work in a parkade booth, and it just seems that some people feel that anything that inconveniences them gives them the right to park wherever they like.

For instance... you have a parking pass for the parkade. The parkade has an elevator. However, your usual spot on the 2nd level is taken (No, spots aren't assigned, and this parkade has 14 levels). This apparently entitles you to park in the reserved special event parking. Cue rage when told otherwise.

Or... You're 'only going in for five minutes'. You know this one. This is apparently the magic phrase that entitles you to park in handicap spots/fire lanes/reserved parking/middle of the road. Cue rage when you get ticketed/towed.

Maybe I was too nice, but that's been my nature since grade school. I'd get beat up so many times for being honest when telling adults about someone else as a kid that as an adult I've come to expect that if I did such a thing I'd be more than just beat up.

Plus, we have tons of after school programs here. It's not uncommon to see parents sitting in their cars idling in the fire lane, but if you ask them to scoot up so you can get out, they will. I have no idea how long the lady had been there, and I sure wasn't going to wait until the program was over to go home. I teach fifth grade. Energy runs out very quickly. I want to gtfo asap.
