And, honestly, none of this needed to happen if people were using even a modicum of common sense about their winter driving. The car that appears to have lost control had Connecticut plates, so its not like snow is unusual in that area. Freaking morons. If it weren't for people like that, the roads would be much safer.
you would think people in this area would know how to drive in snow. and i think about that every winter. im not very experienced in the snow, but i try to be careful becuase i know its tricky, same thing with freezing rain and ice and all that fun stuff. but i still have to worry about the idiots around me who dont care and speed off.

i was driving home last week after some snow squalls (may be same day you wrote about, i cant remember) and I-84 appeared to be wet and they mentioned possible freezing at night. so i drove 40 mph. i wasnt risking it. every other asshole FLEW by me.

I saw someone do that on the parkway last year. Road was perfectly clear, yet some idiot in a Daewoo...managed to back up traffic for miles. He apparently spun out (again, on a perfectly clear, dry road), and went into the wall backwards. Meaning, his car was at 90 degrees from the wall. How the hell did he do that?
      Most likely reason? Road racing.

I watched a road racer clip his buddy while traveling a busy freeway just as it had a major split. The first of the three was enough ahead of his friends that he was way out of it, but as the back two were weaving back and forth, the one behind got too close as the one in front was crossing back over from the offshoot to stay on the freeway, and clipped him.

The car I was in was driven by someone smart who'd slowed down a bit to let these clowns pass us by, so we got an excellent view of it all.

The leader turned nearly sideways, to the left, and rammed pretty hard into the center divider, whereupon he then rebounded, now facing the right, and crossed back towards the side, where he was promptly run into by the same friend that sent him out of control in the first place.

Both cars were undrivable by that point. The leader lost his radiator when he hit the divider, and then his rear axle when his friend smacked into him. The friend lost his radiator when he slammed his front end into the leader's car.

We called the highway patrol, and they were pulling up on the opposite side of the freeway as we were departing. We had no reason to stay, since there was no way for the idiots to get away with their wrecked cars, and the cops had the friend's cell number in case they had questions.

The best part is that the one who wasn't involved in the crash had stopped a bit ahead to see what happened to his friends, and the cop that had shown up was taking note of his presence on the side of the road, since we'd reported that there were three racers involved.

It just warms my heart to know that they trashed their cars doing something stupid and they managed to not involve a single other vehicle in their mess.

      ^-.-^

Ah, you have described the classic symptoms of 4WD Invulnerability Syndrome! I see it all the time here... Anyone with 4WD drives as if it was a pleasant summer's day, regardless of road conditions.
I have 4WD and am one of the rare people who don't drive like morons. Remember it is 4 wheel DRIVE, not 4 wheel STOP. The sad part is when I am not going 40 in in 30 thru a foot of snow, the idiots behind me are mad that I am not.
