That is not a lane!

I was driving last night, and nearly got killed by a moron in a truck!

I was stopped at an intersection, trying to turn right. The street I was turning on to had a single wide lane, and a small right-turn only lane. I see a gap in the cross traffic coming up; the only other vehicle is a truck towing a trailer, but he's in the right-turn only lane, so I don't need to worry about him, right?

WRONG!

I pull out and make the turn, only to look in my rear-view mirror to see this truck barreling down the road at me! He didn't make the damn turn, didn't even signal that he had changed his mind, just kept coming right for me!

I quickly accelerated up to speed, but he was still awfully close. And worse, he seemed to be under the impression that this was a two-lane road, because he kept trying to pass me, on the right! He even got right beside me at one point, which REALLY freaked me out! Nothing seemed to convince him that THERE WAS NO EXTRA LANE THERE!

He finally turned off to the right a few blocks later, but I was shaken up for the rest of the night!

This is exactly why I never assume someone is going to turn until I actually see them making the turn. Not worth betting my life on other people paying more attention than I do.

Never assume that the car that's coming towards you will or will not keep moving in a given direction.

Glad he didn't manage to sideswipe you while under the mistaken impression that there was more than one lane.

There's an evil portion of me that says the guy knew, he just didn't care. After all, he is Le Importante, so why should *HE* be inconvenienced by something as trivial as other drivers?

That's how my Dad ended up totaling his truck. Guy gave every indication of taking a left turn, then turned right just as Dad was passing him. Tore out the entire left side of his truck and part of the trailer.

If I am sitting at an intersection yielding to other traffic, I will NOT move until the other people actually turn.

Too many close calls with idiots who left their turn signals on and they weren't really going to turn.

And I feel your pain about the "extra" lanes. Ugh. Both the city I work in and the city I live in have certain roads that are made somewhat larger (I'm assuming for trucking, because of it being industrial areas) or for some reason, one side of the road has more room than the other, and all the drooling morons in a hurry ALWAYS try to take advantage of them. It's so frustrating, especially when that road thins out and it's either you move, or he move.
