Many new locomotives are pretty quiet compared to older models, and even some areas have forbidden them to blow their horns at crossings. (Of course these same area residents then bitch if someone gets hit because there's "no warning," but that's another rant entirely )
Ah, yes, we have those idiots, too. Funny thing is, they didn't start bitching until the RailRunner Express started running 4 years ago. Apparently they hadn't noticed the freight trains that have been coming through at all hours of the day, blowing their whistles, since we've had railroad tracks.
Just like you shouldn't gridlock an intersection by entering it when you don't have a resonable expectation (the car ahead of you traveling at a speed that would mean a sudden stop would still leave more than enough room for your vehicle) of being able to cross it completely
True, but you have to hope everyone else on the road is also paying attention. If they'll think you're stopped at the green for no reason, you're going to get honked at, sworn at, or have idiots flying around you and causing crashes. (Yes, the last one happened to us.)

So let them. Do you really care what they think?
You can only control your own actions. Don't do something you know is wrong just because someone raises a rukus.
The Rich keep getting richer because they keep doing what it was that made them rich. Ditto the Poor.

The problem is that I know I shouldn't care, but I do anyhow. And I'm about to lose my social coach, and my anxiety isn't really severe enough for me to get bumped to another level, so it's going to continue to be a slow process. I still have a hard time with "if the person behind you is trying to go to quickly then you need to slow down for your turn sooner, not later, than normal". That sort of anxiety makes it really easy to mis-judge how much space there is on the other side of the intersection. And my parents labour under the delusion that driving is easy and safe, and raise a fuss if I won't borrow the car when I visit them.
And the whole idea behind defensive driving, which insurance companies really like you to know, is that you avoid the crashes caused by other idiots, not just avoid causing them yourself. I can see being uncomfortable if I know that there's good odds someone's going to not remember they need to stop. It's why I've been known to go through an intersection even though I really had time to stop. And no, it didn't shake the idiot tailgating me, but that made me even more glad that I went through - if he didn't stop for that, and was so close behind me, what are the odds that I wouldn't have been hit?
