One frustrating anecdote from shopping yesterday.
My girls and I went out to do a grocery run yesterday, followed by a brief jaunt up the road to Goodwill to drop off some items we didn't need anymore and wanted to donate. Shopping was uneventful, and we got onto the road leading to Goodwill with relative ease.
The entrance to the Goodwill lot has a traffic light, with two driving lanes each way as well as a left-turn lane each way. There's a separate signal for the left turns as well, and my guess would be they're sensor-activated--if there's no one waiting in the turn lane, the protected turn doesn't trigger and all through-traffic lanes get to go. If both turn lanes have someone waiting, then there's a pair of protected turns, while if only one of the turn lanes is occupied then that side gets a protected left and a straight light, while the other side gets all red.
That said, I came up to this intersection while the lights were still red, as the cross-traffic (two large business lots) had the green light. I pull into the left-lane and wait. The oncoming left-turn lane was empty, and there was a line of cars in the inner oncoming through lane.
The lights for my side turn green, including a green arrow for me, so I start to make my turn. At that moment, I noticed a silver Jeep come racing up to the intersection in the outer oncoming lane, and started to slow a bit in preparation for hitting the brakes if they didn't stop. They continued up to the stop line and over it at a clip that would've carried them right through the intersection, if I didn't take that moment to hit the horn.
The Jeep stopped more than a carlength over the stop line, and I finished my turn as the lady driving the Jeep gave me a
look.
So to that lady, I have just one question: What part of a solid red light, an entire line of stopped cars, and a big red Jeep making a turn in front of you don't you understand? It's the red Jeep, isn't it? Everyone else has trouble with that part too.
