  • I am cursed to be cut off...

I must be. It's the only explanation.

Maybe it's something with Edmonton drivers, but where I learned to drive, you merge at the speed of traffic in the lane you're merging into. 10 km/h over the limit, 20 km/h below, it doesn't matter, you match that speed, then adjust once you're safely in.

So that's what I do. As I'm coming down the on ramp, I eyeball for a good-sized gap in traffic, then match to the speed of the vehicle ahead of it. This was how I was taught by the professional driving course I took way back when I was 16, and theoretically it should be the safest way to go.

So why is it whenever I try and merge, the car BEHIND me in the lane I want to merge into always steps on the gas and cuts me off?

I'm not talking a little behind, like a car length or two, either.

Today I was driving home from work (Graveyard shift, blegch). It's Sunday morning traffic... three lanes of highway, and maybe four cars including me on that section of the highway at that time. Middle lane is completely empty as far as the eye can see.

I match to a minivan in the lane I'm merging into (Keeping a car length of two, of course) and he's doing the limit of 90.

About 10 car lengths back of us is an old Dodge Stealth, also doing the speed limit. As soon as I hit the point where the divider drops away, and the dotted lines start, the driver of the Stealth immediately hits the gas... as much as his worn out old beast can manage, anyway, and I watch incredulously as he methodically closes the gap in such a way that I'm forced to brake and drive the shoulder a bit, because he's determinedly moved into the spot I was going to take.

If I had just merged over as planned, I'm quite certain he either would have tailgated, or crammed his beat up sportscar right into my trunk. The middle lane was clear, up until I appeared, he seemed to be content ten carlengths back of the minivan, and it seemed the whole reason for him speeding up was my car's imminent invasion of his lane.

Now, I'd write this off as someone just being a douche, but... this happens ALL THE TIME. At least three times a week, in all traffic conditions. Enough that I know to watch out for it.

Why do people do this?! You were perfectly happy where you were, going the speed you were going. The car ahead of you isn't going to go any faster, and I'm going the speed they are, so I'm not going to slow you down... where does this sudden need to possess the space I need to occupy to avoid slamming into the guardrail come from?

Welcome to the wonderful world of driving where it's always about "me". Don't pull in front of "me" because you might slow "me" down. Don't do into "my" lane just because I'm a mile behind, i will catch up and you will slow "me" down.

the only time I think something like that is OK is if the person behind the vehicle is following them (someplace they don't know how to get to etc..) and the road is busy - but there is no way anyone outside of the vehicle caravan (wagon train?) can tell.

You have good driving etiquette. I wish more people knew how to merge. Usually, I'm in the lane people want to merge into. They don't try to match the speed and just pull over willy-nilly! I'm going 80, they cut me off in front going 40 and i bust my breaks. gah!

That is the typical Utah driver. However, in my experience (because I drive a minivan), that Stealth would have hit the gas as soon as he saw a minivan ahead of him because we all know they should be behind everyone.

I've found that if I want to change lanes to pass someone, but there's someone in the lane I want to be in, if I turn on my turn signal, they will suddenly speed up so they are not behind me. It's a great way to fill that too small gap that would put them too close for comfort had I cut them off.

Get the same problem when merging onto the highway. Usually, if someone is coming off the ramp, you move to the other lane. Not usually a problem because you'll eventually pass me and can get ahead me, so it won't really do anything to you. But no, you want that lane and expect you to either A) slow down so much your tires almost start smoking because there is now a line of cars doing the samething you are or B) make you speed up to get ahead of you and almost fall off the side of the road when you speed up as well. I've been nearly ran off the road by cars and semi-trucks because they would not get over! If there is a car beside you in the other lane, I can understand. But if you're the only car for miles, there is no excuse for you not to move over for like, 2 seconds. GR!
Just because they serve you, doesn't mean they like you. And just because they smile and act polite doesn't mean they aren't planning to destroy you.

I suggest you be a bit more aggressive in your merging.

Not so much that you get into accidents, though.

I don't know about your area, but in California, it's the law that traffic on a freeway must make allowance for incoming traffic to merge. If you get caught boxing someone out, you can be ticketed.

i had this happen all the time to me. so i started using it to my advantage. put on signal, wait for behind car to come reaming up, tap breaks and slide in behind them.
granted, it only works if noone is behind me, but the roads can be fairly empty here in boons.
