I never thought I'd see one of these in real life...

I bike to work. I like it, partially because I see and learn interesting things*. It's also just a little bit scary (in an exciting sort of way) to have to dodge the idiot drivers who are somehow blind to cyclists. None of those events have been post-worthy, though (yet).

Instead, I want to share something strange that I saw yesterday on my commute home.

I was approaching an intersection. I had a green light and rode right through the intersection with the rest of the traffic going the same direction. I happened to glance to the right and saw an unusual truck in the left-turn lane on the cross-street. It was a beat-up old pickup truck with one of those camper shell things in the back. The owner of this truck clearly had a message to share... or several.

The truck and the camper shell were both covered with signs. These were homemade white signs (I don't know if they were wood, metal, or laminated paper) with 4-inch high black lettering on them. And when I say they covered the vehicle, I mean that if there was any space that was not already occupied by a window, light, reflector, bumper, or handle, it had one of these signs on it.

Because I was riding past, I couldn't read all of them. I did catch some, though.
    - "WIN BACK AMERICA!" Okay, I've seen sayings like this before. So the driver's got some strong political views...
    - "UFO's WANT WASHINGTON DC!" They can have it for all I care... Wait, what?
    - "OBAMA BELONGS TO THE FRANKFURT VIOLENT COMMUNIST DICTATORS' LEAGUE!" The who? I didn't know such a thing existed! I can't imagine that it has very many members.

And then I saw the driver. He was an older man. He was wearing a baseball cap. He had covered the baseball cap with aluminum foil.

I alternated between -ing and -ing the rest of the way home.

Nope. The capital. I'm employed by a state agency.

I know the exact camper you mean! We see it in the Izzy's parking lot quite often, but I've never seen the driver. Tin foil covered baseball hat certainly explains a LOT though.

I've never actually stopped to read the signs too closely (you know...if you look crazy in the eye, it notices you, and may attack) but I did see some tourists taking pictures of it a few months ago. That was my chuckle of the the day actually.

          Sometimes, I love this town!

Izzy's, huh? I've been thinking about taking Mrs. Shirts out for dinner there sometime...

Well, next time you see the camper, you can check to see if I got my quotes right. I did have a mile and a half of biking left, and I can only hope that I got them right. You'll also have to tell me if the driver is wearing his foil hat again--maybe it was just Paranoia Day or something.

I actually spotted it again today in a Burger King lot, but I was trying to dodge a little yellow sports car because the driver (who was on her cell phone) kept drifting into the bike lane, so I didn't stop to do any more reading.
