  • Merging Morons

I swear, I'm tempted to just deal with lower gas mileage and take the old highway home instead of the freeway, since no one can seem to get it right.

You, merging.....YOU find the gap. It's courtesy for me to move over for you. Granted, during the morning suicide rush, it becomes more like necessity because I can't get in the left lane with everyone whizzing past at 80+ because they have 10 minutes to get to work, and I'm too scared to try. So rather, I try to speed up a bit or let off to let people in.

    I'm about done with it.

That is, if you're even paying attention, I'm trying to let you in. GET IN. We're neck and neck. I CAN'T get over, I'm trying to let you in but your stupid ass isn't finding the gap. So now I have to hit the brakes and slow way down to let you in so you can continue on at 50 mph in a 65. Idiot.

This morning I lost it and just went in the left lane and flew past these idiots in a van who merged at 45 mph and CONTINUED at that speed.

I'm so sick of this crap.

I feel your pain. This happens to me all the time, to the point where if there is someone to my right who is doing it correctly, I'm pleasantly surprised. I was taught this in Driver's Ed, but apparently there are people of all ages who think that it's up to the cars already on the highway to yield to the ones on the on-ramp (and on the rotary). Stupid assholes.
I was not hired to respond to those voices.

If I can get over, I will. If I can't, I will pay attention to the person on the On Ramp to try to gauge my speed so they can get on.

If I am getting on the freeway, I will try to gauge my speed to catch the gap. Unless of course there's a jackass making sure that noway no how I will get on the freeway.

Idiots. When merging onto a freeway you have to match your speed to the vehicles already on the freeway so as to not get ass-ended.

Even if this requires flooring the gas pedal, as can sometimes be necessary if stopped by a ramp meter.

Well, it doesn't help that a lot of people around here are still ignorant of this freeway, thinking it's just a twin to the old highway (where the speed limit is much slower, but that highway goes by a lot of businesses and has stoplights it seems every mile). No, this is a real freeway, like 94. If you go north, it will take you all the way to Superior. Yes, it's a real freeway. You SHOULD be going at the very least 60 mph on a decent day.

It's a daily and almost nightly occurance I have to whizz past someone going 50-55 for no apparent reason.

            Hear hear!

I always seem to catch the yahoo who paces me, whether it's me merging or him. If I'm the one merging, he's the clueless driver who matches my position so that I can't get the gap, whether I speed up or slow down (he always stays next to me). If he's the one merging, he'll slow down with me 'till we're both crawling along at 50, and then merge behind me when I finally get frustrated and speed up again. Good grief.

And then one day I was behind the yahoo. Tootling up the on-ramp at 45, when highway speeds were 65. Not merging, trapping me next to two cars that kept me stuck on the ramp. I finally got a gap behind those two and blasted past him, to find him laughing.

You're over-thinking it. Those people believe the law says everyone yields for them, and they don't have to yield for anyone. Or signal.

That's what drives me oh so crazy. Why do they match my damn speed so that we'll ultimately end up crashing together if I don't either pound the gas or slow down? Same situation, if I'm merging, they keep up pace to pace with me, and when they are merging, they won't fricken adjust their speed so they can either get ahead of me, or be behind me.

Then there was last night....oh my freaking lord.......I was just tootling along, all of a sudden coming up real fast on a Jeep as we were about to take an exit ramp, and then SLAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAM the brakes, we were down to 30 mph on the ramp....it was curvy, but NOT that curvy. The van in front of the Jeep then proceeded to try to merge at 40 mph......and stayed at 40. As sucky as it was, I "one upped" the van along with the Jeep because I didn't have time for that crap. The only time I advocate doing that is if all lanes are clear and someone is merging or driving way too slow that soon enough someone will catch up and almost run you over.

I really wish it was that clear-cut.

I live in Wisconsin. Northeast, Fox Valley area. Around here, the speed limit is universally believed to be about 4-8mph too slow. If you're in a 65 and you actually go 65 during rush time, you will be passed by an average of twelve cars a minute. I lock the cruise in just shy of 70... and am one of the slowest cars on 441. I know the laws though; average for a +5-15 ticket is around $180, I don't have that kind of money. (+0-5 is a tenth that and trust me, cops won't pull you over for that.) So when there's not quite enough room behind me and someone's trying to merge, you can forget about me speeding up.
