  • Start of college is upon us!!!

    And everyone's LOST!!!

This weekend, everyone's moving into the dorms. Since I live by the university, I have the dubious pleasure of sharing the road with lost students/parents.

Today, I saw about half a dozen last minute, sharp lane changes/turns, but this one took the cake.

There's a left-turn lane, and a two straight lanes. Hubs was driving, and we're in the left turn lane to turn left. A young couple in the straight lane next to us notice "Hey, that's our turn!" and cut Hubs off in the intersection as they make a sudden sharp left!

As we get through the intersection, the car stops. They just...stop, leaving us hanging in the intersection. They start to pull off to the side, but notice that they're blocking the Wendy's driveway, so they pull forward and park in the bus stop pullout. As we pass them, the driver is looking at what looks like a Google Maps print-out.

I can commiserate with being lost (I spent 30 minutes in Salem, OR once trying to find the interstate, and don't even get me started about when I tried to stop for a piss break in Olympia! ), but you still need to pay attention to traffic around you! If you miss a turn, you wait until you can safely turn around and go back; you don't just cut someone off! Or you yell at your hubby who's on the phone with your sister-in-law who's giving directions to turn on ABC street that you passed ABC street five blocks ago and you need to know what street is coming up that you can turn on! (Oh yeah, getting lost in Portland, that was fun!). But you don't cut people off and break traffic laws!!! Grrr.

At least they were actually attempting to use a map!

All the out-of-town idiots around here dont. They just simply stop in the middle of the road and just figure that you'll just sit behind them and wait til they've figured out which way to go.

Oh, yeah. Google maps... About 2 months ago, all the addresses on my whole road - all 20 miles of it - went off by 2 miles. Google's little indicator thingie shows up 2 miles south of the actual location. I reported it many times, but it wasn't until I mentioned that the large animal vet next door, who pays for their business to show up on the map, might be entitled to a refund, that they even answered me. And they'll fix it the next time they get around to "updating" this neck of the woods - some 3 or 4 months from now. That much longer for me to repeat my spiel: "You need to look about two miles north of where Google says it is." So far, nobody has rung the doorbell when I'm in bed...

The street view is still correct, though. Choose it for my address and you see cornfields in every direction. No houses, no barns. Idiots.

Could be worse. I was reading about how Google lost an entire town in Florida recently. (Don't remember the name. I'd Google it, but, you know...)
